Your whole post is invalid because of XI.

Let's just say SE isn't font of the Open world topics, they tend to stick around for a while then get nuked from the front page.

I just had a 2 week vacation from the forums because of mine...

    I'm right with you OP,
except i've already done the MMO Duty roulette and was disappointed with EVERY release of the last 10 years.
Despite the total lack of open world content going on here, and my general *ugh* to the Lobby setup,
Well, having a duty finder is better than forcing shout groups...

i love Final Fantasy as a world and still prefer this game over every other option.
and i played FFXI for 7 years so i've had my fill.. especially since the old days are gone. Time to move on.

Still, to me anyway, 'Open world' is a place like beadeaux.
    Danger around every corner.
    Maze like zone.
    Treasure! Gathering! Rare materials! Quests!
A zone branched off of the main road that you can't teleport to the end of.
You have to fight your way through tooth and nail to reach the cool stuff you need buried deep inside.

So i'm just pluggin away one way or the other looking forward to what the future brings.
I'm pretty sure it'll be good, but the here and now is just OKAY.
Just that sadly OKAY is better than everything else. @_@

If you keep supporting and playing this game kudos to you but I just can't anymore. Since the time I started playing this game up till now (6 months?) I have only made like 3 friends and have been shuffling through FC's since launch. I think this is largely due to the dutyfinder aspect of this game with no creative open world content.
Now why don't you take a break? No one forces you to play the game in subsequent months, e.g. I still find it nice to take breaks and drop in after a new patch.
Even though I still crave for Open world content .... I don't think it's meant to forge nice FC or lot of friends, because that's something only you can do yourself, e.g. join a FC and be active & communicative etc.

There's danger around every corner, no it's not like a maze (although those could be added - I'd love to see a Sacrarium like instance that changes depending on the time of day), there's treasure and rare materials (and there's a quest that sends you there, also atma weapons require you to kill bosses), and you have to fight your way through tooth and nail to reach the cool stuff.

Is it that you want to be able to solo in an area? Or is it that you want gigantic massive zones like what ffxi has?

Edit: Actually I'll level with you here, FFXI had some amazing ideas that work really well on paper. Garlaige Citadel weights that open up doors? Brilliant! Quicksand caves weight doors that you need specific people of a certain race to stand of them? Neat concept! Magical doors in Sky that are only open one way at a time and you have to hit a switch to change them? Awesome teamwork, everyone can work together! Shifting the walls in Eldieme Necropolis to uncover secret passages? So cool!

None of those mechanics are in any way fun if you're either by yourself or are in a small party. Especially nowadays with there being 0 people in those zones to begin with. And let's not forget to mention that most of the time you were going through these areas you had sneak and/or invisible on because a single mob could completely decimate a full party without too much trouble (Bombs in Ifrit's Cauldron I'm looking at you >.>). On top of that, even when those areas were populated it was a chore to get people to actually bother to go stand on the switches to open doors in Garlaige for example. Conceptually the ideas are very interesting but in reality (and due to human nature and how awful some people are towards one another), it just doesn't work.

Would I like to see more interesting content out in the open world? Sure! Do I want it if it's going to be potentially annoying down the line? Nope.

Never was part of an active guild and yet I completed the main story with just the help from complete strangers that didn't want anything in return. I don't know where you're getting this negativity from but i've never in my life met so nice and helpful people that I did in XI. On my first day a random guy bought my tarutaru a full gear set and few starter spells and explained how the FoV works.

The nicest group of players I've ever met. Ever.

There are nice folks in this game, as well - but in this game, there's much less need to depend on them. In FFXI, and presumably other earlier MMOs, there are many parts of the game that you simply cannot do solo, no matter how godly your gear. Switches that require multiple people to activate are one example that has already been named. Folks that wanted to access content in areas like that had no choice but to depend on the kindess of friends, guildmates, or even total strangers, all of whom have their own things to do. When they're willing to help out, that's great, but then you feel guilty for asking them to go out of their way.

In this game, there are no such barriers except inside instances - and if you're inside an instance, then you know all of your companions are there to help each other out. Furthermore, Roulette means that folks are less likely to be barred from content because they can't find enough helpful volunteers; Roulette provides incentives for random strangers to lend a hand, and while the system can and does get abused in various ways (such as folks dropping when they realize there's a noob on the team), for the most part it works well.

This game DOES have a severe shortage of DANGER in the open world, though, and it's frustrating. At the same time, though, due to the lack of stealth abilities if dangerous open worlds WERE added, it would become very frustrating to newer players down the road. While it can be a lot of fun for your full party to do battle with ridiculously powerful mobs to push your way through an area to some objective, once the majority of folks have completed that content new folks trying the same stuff will find themselves waiting for hours to build up a party of folks willing to help.

SE's been working very hard to ensure that no one gets left behind - that the game will ALWAYS be newbie-friendly, and that folks that miss out on the initial "rush" of new content will still be able to participate in that content without depending on others' charity. It's an effort I respect, and while I acknowledge that it has been the cause of other problems, I don't think there are any simple solutions.
