Very little is known about this, but I feel this should probably be bumped up in priority right now. I'm willing to go through the immense effort of agreeing with everyone that the game still needs many other changes to gameplay and classes (must hold back urge to flame), but right now, it would be nice to have some content.
When I started playing FFXIV after pre-release, I had no issues with the game other than performance and the ridiculous lack of content. Yes, we want mog houses, yes, we want delivery boxes, etc., etc., But what about stuff to DO?! That was what made FFXI so much fun was that there was always something to do! EXP, Scroll quests, BCNMs, KNMs, HNMs, Dynamis, Limbus, Sky, Sea, Synthesis (I guess), Main Missions, Zilart Missions, CoP Missions, Outpost Supply Runs, Teleport Points, Job Quests, Conquest Points and so on. Best of all, it took several thousands of hours to do it all!
But we don't have that. We have repeatable guildleves, faction guildleves, a few NMs, and a few minor item quests. Yah, okay, most of you are still in the rank 30s (which makes no sense at all), and most of you are still enjoying your fantasy farmhouse crafting/gathering routines, and that might be enough for you. But for me personally, if it's one thing I want to see in this game that FFXI had, it's the variety of stuff to do!
Public Companies: From what I've read, sounds like a whole 'nother segment of content we could use for both mid-game and end-game. I imagine there's a bunch of exclusive items that are (hopefully) better than what we got for the guildleve NMs. Best part is that it sounds like it's group-oriented, and with public company "quests" there might be opportunities to take down some more NMs.
- I am in favor of a hamlet/city-defense schema (not saying that has to do with public companies. But it could.)
- I am in favor of rare materials dropping from monsters related to this.
- I am in favor of a point system where by participating more, you are rewarded and can spend points on exclusive/rare items that are slightly better than what is crafted NQ, but not as much as HQ.
- I am in favor of a slight increase in SP/EXP rewards from this, but not more than what you'd get from guardian's favor + guildleves.
- I am in favor of having different public companies that each have their own rewards.
- I am in favor of public company quests that involve difficult mid-game and end-game NMs that offer appropriate rewards as well.
- I am also in favor of level cap quests
