I just took it as him pulling off a job/class change. Yugiri even comments on him suddenly changing fighting styles. Just like everybody else, he can be both a bard and a thief and whatever else. Just not all at once.

Why would you think he's a bard? He uses Daggers and shields, right? I figured he was a Gladiator.

Checking around, I was wrong about shields. He just normally uses the dagger. Still not really bard like.

In one of the main story quests, he calls himself a Bard. (I didn't take a screenshot, sorry, but it's during the search for the Crystal thieves in preparation for the Leviathan fight.)

Ultimately, he's a weird hodgepodge of things, probably so he can be semi-useful during fights. He uses daggers, one during battle, two during cutscenes, and like most Scions he can heal the player character.
