The only thing I would probably bother with glamouring (if I ever change my mind) would be the scholar gear to Acolyte or the black mage to Battlemage.
It is dependent on what item you are changing the appearance to. The best way to determine what you need, and make sure you don't get the wrong thing is to "Cast Glamour" the item. It will tell you that you don't have the required catalyst, and tell you exactly which one you need.

At least its not like TERA (and I think Aion?) where you have to destroy gear. Expensive gear, mind you.
FFXIV *skinning* is the pits and the cost of buying all the bits if you cant craft them is going to be horribly expensive Tera and Aion I could skin my gear every second day if I feel like it for a minimal amount of effort and currency. Skinning on every other game Ive played is a simple and easy process not like this huge ugly cumbersome thing we have been given on FFXIV. In fact even though I have all crafts at lvl 50 I cant even be bothered to use this vanity system I will just continue wearing the butt ugly armour the game offers.

I like the way DC universe did vanity, you had your main equipment screen then you had a second vanity screen which displayed all your gear spots, and you could obtain vanity armour (which was like minions in that you use the item and it's put in the vanity screen and doesn't take up your inventory anymore) and then you could just swap the gear you wanted to look like at any time in the vanity screen and it also gave you colour sliders so you could change your colour scheme at any time too.

Then you could lock your appearance so no matter what gear you equipped you would always look like what is on your vanity screen. So you could change your gear without going through a tedious process of reapplying your vanity.

It would be cool if ffxiv did something similar by giving us a vanity screen and any gear we've had bound to us in the past would become a vanity option or something. Same class and level restrictions we have now but just an easier friendlier system to do it with.

I hate everything in this game that I have to rely on crafters. let me fight monsters and buy/sell everything from/to NPCs.

the only ppl that enjoy this glamour system is crafters , i asked a friend to craft me some prism ,changed chest and leg slots and done for now. Will buy more prism if prices go down (400gil to craft , selling for 15k?, and crafters wonder why ppl go mad over anything that involves them )

I don't remember what game it was, but there was one that had a vanity system where you had secondary inventory slots next to your primary slots. All you did was drop the armor you wanted to project into the secondary slot. Why does SE have to make something simple into what we have now?

Rift, EQ2, apparently Age of Conan. It's the normal way of doing it. FF14's way is dumb.

It's a complete let down if you ask me.

I duno why they just didn't go with a separate tab for vanity gear they could have still kept the glamour prisms to affix gear to a slot but its really convoluted and restrictive the way its been implemented.

I duno why this company can't just do things the tried and tested way for once instead of trying to redesign the wheel.

I can't see them changing it to the standard now which is disappointing as I would like to use the reindeer suits as my healing gear lol.

Rift, WildStar, soon to be GW2 with their incoming revamp. None of them restrict what armor type you can use. The first two have simple wardrobe slot set ups where you can equip any armor type as long as you're the right level for it and both have ticky boxes to hide or display each individual armor slot. Saying XIV's is the least restricting is nonsense.

Honestly, the only reason I can think of that they did this (and why they made ventures and atmas inventory items) is because they want to put pressure on players to buy the new retainers. Sleazy as hell.

I'm just pretending the whole system doesn't exist, except maybe to glamour my staff so I don't have to see the ugly glow anymore.
