Incorporating stances is a very promising idea. Functionally it would do the same job as the AOE toggle button. If the two different stances were visually different enough, we could just eliminate the AOE toggle UI element altogether.

Now there's an idea. If your character is physically standing differently and/or wielding their weapon differently, it would give an additional visual clue as to what mode you are in ... in addition to the top of the ground around you turning red and every target in range gaining a targeting reticle.

Just off the top of my head ... Disciples of Magic in Area-Effect stance could hold their two-handed weapons horizontally, instead of vertically, with the spellcasting animation raising it over their head.

Indeed. One of the main complaints was that we have to look at the chatlog and the UI more often than the actual battle, so if the actual battle had more informative visual indicators of our status, we wouldn't have to rely on the UI so much.

You can only toggle AOE right before the final confirmation of your spell cast. Therefore, you always need to press 'enter' or the 'confirm' button twice before your spell goes off. If the AOE toggle was active all the time, you could just set your AOE toggle beforehand, and then just press the confirm button once to cast a spell.
Drives me completely batty. I only want to push once and BAM the thing works. This is a nice idea.

Picture is exactly how it should be implemented, only without the big cone on the floor, I'd go crazy if I had to see that every time. Just the blue 'sub target' icons would be awesome.

I actually prefer to see an AoE shadow that shows me where it's going to hit. Make it toggle-able of course.

Think Chrono Trigger. If you did a shape-based attack, the selected target would have a solid pointer, and the indirect targets would have flashing pointers, and the ground would have a glowing color in the shape and position of the target area.
