AOE Visual Overlay and AOE Toggle Improvements (sample pic)

Here's another quick UI suggestion, this time to improve the AOE mechanic in the game.

    Visual mockup HERE: http://i.imgur.com/UV5EA.jpg

Problems with the current AOE toggle:

It's cumbersome to use since the only time it shows up is right before you cast a spell.

The actual "area" of effect is oftentimes hard to discern.

    Solutions:

Have the AOE toggle button be present all the time, so that no matter what you are doing, pressing the 'z' hotkey toggles AOE on or off. This would help to prevent confusion.

Have a subtle graphical overlay showing the actual area of your spell.

Have additional subtargets show you clearly which other mobs are going to be hit with your AOE spell.

    UPDATE:

Having a more visual indicator of AOE in the form of stances, which is basically the same function as an AOE widget in the UI, would be an interesting way to get players more involved in the actual combat instead of always having to look at the UI and chatlog.

Just off the top of my head ... Disciples of Magic in Area-Effect stance could hold their two-handed weapons horizontally, instead of vertically, with the spellcasting animation raising it over their head.

I like the picture you included, also there should be a button on the gamepad you can press to toggle aoe on/off for gamepad users.

Yeah, the controller issue is something I was thinking about, but I decided to forget about it for now, since this is only for PC users, and they PS3 and PC interfaces will eventually be custom tailored.

You like that outfit? You should see my other UI thread.

Alot of PC users use gamepad because currently its 100X easier to control movement and cameras imo than with keyboards/mice. Anyways they could make it so you hold down one of the L or R buttons and another button to have more functions available on the gamepad.

    This is brilliant.

I wish that the Development Team would do this instead of removing AoE altogether.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aside from the visual indicator of who the aoe spell will hit, aoe toggle already works like this for a controller.

    Consider yourself corrected.

You can only toggle AOE right before the final confirmation of your spell cast. Therefore, you always need to press 'enter' or the 'confirm' button twice before your spell goes off. If the AOE toggle was active all the time, you could just set your AOE toggle beforehand, and then just press the confirm button once to cast a spell.

    If I may paraphrase.

Instead of putting "spells" into AoE mode (and asking each time), you would put your "spellcaster" into AoE mode. Almost like a stance, if you will. Disciples of Magic would have two stances, Area-Effect and Single-Target. Those stances would be controlled by Rentahamster's redesigned toggle button.

Personally, I think every Armory Class should have stances (not just Marauder) ... but that's a discussion for another thread.
