Then don't buy it? If you want it you'll get it, if you don't want it you won't get it. Considering your join date is Jan 2014 I figure you didn't know SE already planned to charge us for additional retainers both before and after Yoshi P took over.
None of this is honestly a surprise.

The free inventory upgrade have already happened.
FF XIV 1.0 started with 180 item slots (character (80) + character bazaar (10) + 1 retainer (80) + 1 retainer bazaar (10))
ARR started with 815 item slots (character (100) + armory chest (325) + 2 retainer (350) + 2 retainer bazaar (40))
If people complain about not enough space with 815 slots, then a 3rd retainer would be also not enough and they would start to complain that the 4th and 5th cost a fee.
Dream suits and Usagi kabuto are tradeable, still obtainable after the events (in the MB) and therefore would never go into the armoire.

a) it was still collected from a seasonal event, b) it's purely vanity equipment, & c) it really ought to be allowed into the armoire as an 'exception' if you will.

a) it was originaly collected from a seasonal recipe, to be correct ^^
Hey, all my dream suits I crafted as HQ during 1.0 ^^
Dream Tunic recipe from 1.0:
Dream Tunic Materials 1 (event mats)
Dormouse Fur 2
Cotton Yarn 1
And even in ARR it is still craftable in some way. Only that a NPC craft it for you now. You give him as example a Dream Tunic Material and he give you a Dream Tunic. And because it is tradeable, it was also already be able to get it before the event. At least on legacy servers, who people sold dream gear and the leftover event mats.
