Assume two separate players, extra retainers that can sell and constant demand for the stuff they sell. One player with with two retainers, one with 3 (or more). Both players want to get this "X-item(s)" that will be crucial(but not mandatory) for end-game raiding progression. However, its costs, material wise and tips are up above the sky. They need to make money to acquire it. Both start selling the same stuff, player two however has a wider market, and more lee-way to undercut people. Player two also has extra retainers for venturing that will gain extra gil here and there. Player two will have more monopoly on the market compared to player one.
Player two gets the money s/he needed, while player one is still playing and selling.
You do realize sending your retainer venturing to get 7 eggs for example is far less efficient than going out and getting them yourself, as they stated (and we even seen) it could take 1-18 hours for far less than you can get in even 30 minutes.
Depending on congestion, a stack or more in an hour versus 21 eggs in 3 hours..which is more efficient? More power to you if you feel the difference between $2 is going to be so huge to the point 1 person can make more money than the other, but unless the amount you gain per venturing changes, someone who only has 2 won't lose such a huge profit over someone who has 3+ if the current economic trends continue, hell if anything undercutting will probably be more of an issue now.

So long you don't get loot for paid coil runs.
You forgot to mention the third player, who don't paid for extra retainers but have a second character with gatherer 50. He can farm treasure maps twice each day, can sell them twice each day, earn twice as much money than the other players. And then ask a friend or LS comrade to help to trade the gil to his main character.Assume two separate players, extra retainers that can sell and constant demand for the stuff they sell. Extra retainers only don't make you automatic richer than other with no extra retainers.

To have access to the game servers.
Just throw them away once you have better equip that can wear more than 1 class/job (like crafted ilevel 90 gear) and don't want it for vanity. If you want it later again, they are still obtainable.
Another thing from the forum archives
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...l=1#post307720I receive a lot of suggestions to increase inventory space or make inventory unlimited, but it is impossible to possess every single item (which is increasing constantly through updates) on a single character. Please understand that this is physically impossible, because there is a cost related limit to server storage (the location where everybody’s character data is stored). In order to increase stored data, (tens of thousands of characters x numbers of items x bytes of each item) there is no other option but to increase hard drive size. Basically, charging fees for additional storage options exists to combat this issue.
Even for stand-alone package games, the size of the save data is greatly affected by the number of items, so the numbers of items and the size of each item are determined by available server space.
Even if it was more about the recipe revamps.

Can you show me where you bought your initial 2 retainers on the website? I'm looking at the mog station and I don't see any options that state:
"First 2 retainers = x$"
As I'm pretty sure when I went to rehire my retainers it cost neither gil nor real money. If you're paying $10 for retainers and not to access FFXIV, I think you got scammed, sorry to say.

Oh crap, you are right. Can you show me where you bought your initial 2 retainers on the website? I'm looking at the mog station and I don't see any options that state:

It doesnt say anywhere that 10$ is giving me access to all the dungeons and raids nor does it say i'll have access to all the crafting recipes... man this 10$ fee is going to get bigger and bigger following your train of thought.
Try again after you stop reaching.
However, since you love to reach - When you pay a sub for a P2P game you are paying to access the service, did you not read the terms? Your 2 retainers came with that subscription fee, them charging for additional retainers didn't come with that subscription fee. Using your logic, you should be entitled to expansion packs and add-ons for free simply because you pay $10. Heck, I have nothing against you personally, it's just the train of thought that seems to ignore your sub simply means you get to log in for as long as the service remains, anything else is up to SE's discretion.
So again, where does the mog station say you paid $10 purely for 2 retainers? I don't recall the game asking me to pay gil or money to access my retainers. You played since 1.0 or you were one of the many who quit the game after a week or two - You shouldn't be this surprised about them charging for additional retainers. It's been the plan since 2010.
So when people say they paid $10 for their retainers, that means they got ripped because your $10 is supposed to be to access the service of FFXIV, otherwise there could be some serious lawsuits if SE is taking your money and not delivering their promise (you can log into FFXIV.)
