The fact is the cost of keeping servers up isnt the biggest cost, and it really isnt effecting development much. They need to test thier changes on a large scale eventually. The idea that server cost is huge in general isnt really justified. Look at private servers, many operate on minimal cost to the point that people can do it for free. The real cost of an MMO is development and they have to pay that no matter what as long as they dont scrap the game.
in an MMO closing servers is quitting. Most MMO that rehauled and has any measure of stability or success continued to stay open. Most that closed, never returned or failed on multiple reopenings, there is a reason for that.
If they are really starved for money they should just go p2p, sure they may lose 90% of the players left, but they would still make more money than now. Of course they may not get many of those people back. In all honesty what they have done is the best plan for them fiscally, the cost of operation is minimal. The only better plan they could do, is make the game f2p and use cash shops and other things while they build the game, and then offer a subscription fee that unlocks everything as they get more real content.
