Basically Nael Van Darnus was the guy in charge of the imperial army before Gaius Van Baelsar took over in 2.0
Nael was the one behind the Dalmund Project and his goal was to use it to strike Eorzea with a huge hit destroying the false gods(primals) beast tribes, and any resistance from Eorzea. However as Dalmund came closer and closer, Nael became more and more corrupt by it, due to the elder primal Bahamut which was inside, (and eventually Nael became Branded by Bahamut near the end before his deafeat).
Nael was truly the big bad in 1.0 and if he is still alive and kicking he is going tol be a major threat due to the powers granted to him by the Elder Primal Bahamut.

Alisae doesn't need the Echo to see an aetheric projection, we didn't use the Echo ourselves to see them. What I meant was MAYBE we'd use to Echo in a cutscene to be able to view Van Darnus' or Louisoix's memories...for Louisoix maybe we'd see what happened at the Battle of Cartaneau Flats. An example for Van Darnus might be when and how Bahamut was able to drive him mad with the Dalamud project that lead to the Lunar Transmitter ultimately bringing Dalamud back into the atmosphere.
Conjecture or not Yoshi-P already said Van Darnus is dead, yes they can retcon it but I'm going under the assumption that this wasn't. I'm big on Lore so yes it's a theory but there is basis to it. A-Trowa-Cant was dead but was able to project himself in the White Mage quest line, though his projection was able to talk. Now there could be a difference between just being dead and for those absorbed by Bahamut, Van Darnus was so Louisoix could have suffered a similar fate, we simply don't know what happened with the white light after all he had a smile on his face, a smile of one having resigned himself to the fate before him. Tears-of-Death was saying that they're both alive, I was merely stating the opposite (with reasons as to why Van Darnus is dead).
Nael van Darnus was the main antagonist of the 1.19+ storyline. He was the Legatus of the VIIth Legion, a group of soldiers that was comprised almost entirely of brain washed Ala Mhigans. During his time in Eorzea he became obsessed with finishing the Meteor Project (actually created by Cid's rather), it was to bring down the lesser moon Dalamud and crash it into Eorzea to kill everyone so the Garleans could take over the land. Gaius van Baelsar let him do what he wanted basically, despite him wanting to subjugate Eorzea in a different way. Van Darnus used many magitek devices to draw aether from the rich parts of Aldenard, the magitek devices in Toto-Rak and the Dzemael Darkhold for example, and was basically feeding this to Dalamud in an effort to bring it down...he was probably under Bahamut's influence by this time. Ultimately he succeeded in creating a Lunar Transmitter, the device the Allagans used to send Dalamud into orbit, and was able to draw Dalamud close enough to where the fall was imminent despite us Adventurers destroying it. With Cid's help we met Van Darnus at the Rivenroad and defeated him, we were so close to Dalamud that his aether was absorbed almost immediately similar to Van Darnus' feeding Ifrit and Garuda's aether to Dalamud. Hope that helped.

returns?
Isn't he at the end of the Story mode fro the Labrynth?

If we're going to be fighting him in Coil 2, I wonder how his fight will work. If the circular room with the insignia similar to Rivenroad's is going to be his battlefield (shown in teaser), then that means BLM's won't have to be on Comet watch.

Well one thing I've learned about characters being brought back from the dead is that despite a character did die it does not mean he can't be brought back.
Being resurrected only means he did die and Yoshi-P did confirm his death but it does not stop someone or something from bring him back from the dead lore wise.
watch this record of 1.0 storyline and you will understand...
