It's funny. They put a tail hole in the Allagan robes, so clearly they know what to do. Then a case of the lazies hit them for every other armor model in the game, I guess.
It's not really a matter of laziness or "Do they know how to do this?"
It's more; "Do we have time to do this?"
Yes, because making a hole in a piece of armor is very time consuming process. Much more than making ear socks, right Shioban?
People have the weirdest ideas about how 3D modelling works.
No, it is lazyness. The process would be pretty simple. And we should complain quite loudly that they implemented a race with a unique feature (tails and fox-cat ears) and then failed miserably to give their armor models a tiny modification in the rear. They did it with the helmets and cowls, so why not on the backs?

Whenever you're adjusting any 3D model it takes time. If I have to go back and modify a 3D model I've made, it takes time. Time I could be spending doing something else.
You can call it laziness, you can say "It's a simple process" but nothing is too complex or simple when time is involved.
It's not actually that easy. But the models previously had this detail to it'd leave me to the other potential reason, which is a more likely scenario is due to model data. Why have a separate version of the model for Miqote's when you can just have a single model (however the reasoning for this is silly).
No, it's time saving. A reason why ARR was able to succeed where it's predecessor failed.
Don't get me wrong on thinking "He doesn't want this, what a stupid white knight", I loved the old details and considerations the game previously had for things like this. But they were time consuming, and extra time isn't a luxury ARR hasn't had much of. From a developers PoV, I can see exactly why they wouldn't bother spending the extra time to adjust it.
Whether you can take it with a slice of maturity or not is a completely different story.
Careful up on the pedestal, looks rickety.
As I do this on a daily basis and understand the process, I can see a number of reasons why they might not bother.
ARR is now built on balancing quality/production time. The minor frill and details we had before are no longer as important as producing the content ASAP.
You could argue "Oh my god, it's such a small thing, why not just do it and get it over and done with." You could say that for a lot of things in games development, but unfortunatley we cut corners and have to sit down and simply decide "Nope, can't be done, this other thing is more important, that'll do for now"
Using the ear protrusion as an example won't work here.
The ears are a higher priority. Having no cat-ears on a cowl would look VERY strange, THAT is a high-priority.
As for tails you should already know this issue is completely different, as they can simply hang over the topology, it doesn't have to have a hole, it's un-nessecary. Therefore it's seen as a low priority as it's not actually causing any real issues saving time in the long-run.
TL;DR - It could be for a few reasons;
1# They simply didn't have the time to dedicate to the modification.
2# Lowering model data by having only one model for the sake of minor clipping was seen as a "low priority".
3# Tail covers aren't necessary at all actually, ear protrusions are, a Miqo'te would look strange without the ears protruding from underneath the armour.
4# [VERY unlikely for such a minor change] The Adjustment may have required going back and adjusting the original high-poly model, which would require a very large amount of time depending on the piece in question to go through the process again.

the trouble with beast-reptilian race,(same with dragon race) on paper it look great.... but do player will play it? or it will be one of the less played because too hard to identify yourself to that race.
and i think it why they go for an hybrid with hyur morphology... for get more people play it. and since viera like race are asked a lot... maybe they will add it for reduce the number of miqo'te.

I pretty strongly believe this is a viera, but they edited the design away from the ffxii and tactics versions to make it more closely relate-able to the current races of ffxiv. I imagine they will be shorter (both in height and ear length) and their ears possibly wider apart, as well as not exactly on the top of their heads. If they are more similarly placed to where miqo'te ears are, then perhaps what we are seeing in this image is simply their ears in the down position, rather than the up-right position, due to the hood's weight. I find it kind of amusing that some people seem to think that viera ears are constantly erect and are incapable of folding back? Bunny ears can swivel around just like dog or cat ears do. =)

The only chance this is a Viera is if they remake the race or call it something else (like changing Galka to Roegadyn and removing their tails). Viera have coiled cartilage at the base of their ears. There have been zero Viera in any game that had bent ears in any way and they only grow straight up. It's a new XIV-Viera or it's something with horns. The tip is pointed, too, so that suggests horns. Looks like a nannygoat horn, somehow. The second top poll choice was "mixed-race" as well, so maybe it's a half-miqo'te/half-elezen with extra long ears. It could even be a unique NPC with one-of-a-kind body parts like Minifilia's boobs, too.

Well if you go by what people think in this thread the ears would look better if they just let them clip through.
So they're wasting time making ears look bad and saving time making tails look bad.

When I look at the image provided, it reminds a lot of this image here lol
Also a fun fact, supposedly "Yugiri" means "Evening Mist."

I can't help but feel people are getting too excited over this stuff.
The expansion is a long ways away still. I could of sworn Yoshi-P in an interview somewhere said it'd at least be another year or more before an expansion dropped. Also who is to say this NPC has anything to do with the future expansion or even a new race? She could be from a new race but doesn't mean it will be a playable race. The mention of this NPC's homeland, there's still plenty of lands out there mentioned we don't have access to. It doesn't mean we will see Doma as a new area and this race (Viera or not.) as a new playable race.
I'm not attempting to dash anyone's hopes here, but from the posts I've seen people are automatically assuming just because a new unidentified NPC hailing from a never-heard-of-until-now land has shown up it must mean they're a teaser for the next race and/or expansion.
EDIT: And since we're on the topic of hats for Miqo'te, let's talk about the Chocobo Mask. If you want to talk about crushed ears you COMPLETELY lose your ears in that thing! Seriously, it's a skullcap with a mask and feathers attached but there's no earholes or even pointy bits under the cap for your ears. They're literally crushed beneath the cap part. From a side or front angle you can imagine maybe your ears are hidden under the feathers but look from a rear or side-rear view and you'll see the truth.
