Sadly I do see a lot of casuals leaving to try to newest greatest thing, and SE will lose the player base they are catering toward, and all that will be left is the hardcore crowd who hates the current game they are paying to play.
Morticous - Senior admin of.... well of nothing. (cool picture here)
I think if this game isn't played from a casual perspective (i.e no more than 2 hours per day) that you'll need something else to supplement it. It's just like WoW: people do their raids, log off for the rest of the week and play something else. Once they get everything they need they unsub and come back with the next content patch.
I'm pretty sure SE has some solid statistics on how many people clear the end game content in certain time frames. Being that they're continuing with their vision I'm guessing what they're doing is working for them. I seriously doubt you're going to see facets of this game convert to FFXI-esque time sinks.
Personally I laugh at the debate between "Hardcore" and Casual" What game is harcore? Every mmo I've ever played, the forums are plagued with 'this game caters to the casual" argument. There will never ever be enough content or hard enough content for someone who can play the game 8 hours a day plus. You will be done in a week.
If you think there should be more of a grind, get lv 30 in pvp.
If you think bosses are too easy, when you get into the primal fight, have half the group sit it out and try to beat it with a team of 4 people
If you think that there's not enough content, don't do it all on Monday, go breathe that fresh air outside once in awhileBut be warned this way you too, will inevitably beat all the content even at a slower pace, because games aren't infinite.
If you guys want a way more hardcore" game, make SE change the level requirments and make level 50 100 times longer to get with repetitive grinding on mobs, because hardcore stuff shouldn't have easy quests to fetch high exp., and remove fates altogether![]()

Actually some challenges on titan HM are worth a try
like 1 tank 7 WHM
or the 7 sch 1 smn ifrit HM. Both have been realised, yet they prove to be very difficult
The problem with that is that no one wants to try anything fun...
3 PLD 1 WAR Low Level (Cutters Cry and below)
3 DRG 1 WHM Low Level (Cutters Cry and Below)
Can all be done. The ones in your post can be done too. No one wants to do them and/or doesn't see a reward for thinking outside the box.
Doing Brayflox With 4 tanks was up there for the most fun I've had in game so far
What does open world content and horizontal progression have to do with the top 1 % of players ?hey need to add more open world content and horizontal progression so I can be that 1% that has unique and high lvl gear
I see them leaving to try the next "wannabe" newest thing, but I don't see them staying. ESO is a *lot* more boring than FFXIV isPretty much all MMO are all exactly the same these days. The only difference these days is the "fantasy world" you choose to live in. I honestly think ESO is going to be more on par with SWTOR than what it wants to be in WoW.
Whether its Final Fantasy, Star Wars, Elder Scrolls, Dungeons and Dragons, Wizardry, Ultima, Lord of the Rings, Warcraft, Everquest, Guild Wars or any other host of IPs... They are all essentially the same game, barring UI and combat differences. They are all sci-fi/fantasy theme parks with usable abilities. They all have some sort of PvPish type thing going on. They pretty much all have the same type of boring quests/sidequests. They all have stories (though some *are* better than others). You just have to pick the setting which you live in.![]()
