I don't need a retainer at all and prefer to have everything with me at any time to make instant use of my crafters and collectors. Right now, whenever I want to craft an item or use my fisher, I have to visit my retainers first, go through the mess that's called inventory and put the stuff back after I am done. Waste of time imo.
One retainer for gear, One retainer for Materia and misc items and one retainer for crafting materialls.
