Not particularly sure why they are so resistant to it anyway. Jumping may not serve a purpose, but I can't stand a game without it. Just jumping for random fun eases me.
On another note...there's way too many invisible walls

I'd say invisible walls are exactly why SE is taking the long view on MAYBE adding swimming. There are many, many places in the game where map boundaries are set by water. If players could swim, SE would need to reevaluate those areas to ensure that players aren't able to reach places they shouldn't be able to reach - and if they can, would need to add different obstacles to prevent swimmers from doing so.
In other words, it's not just something cute they can toss in. It's something that would take a lot of work to evaluate the impact.
There's also the issue of armor, particularly heavy armor. Can we swim in that? Could be jarring. How about medium armor, or clothing - do you swim slower? FFXIV takes a very much less "cartoonish" approach to the MMO genre than games like World of Warcraft do, and a WAR chugging along through the water wearing full Darklight Heavy Armor would be pretty silly.
Fatigue followed by drowning if you swim too far.I'd say invisible walls are exactly why SE is taking the long view on MAYBE adding swimming.
