Thaumaturge is an interesting discipline indeed in terms of its background in the game. To anyone who's done the Ul'dah quest line (and actually paid attention) you find out that the Thaumaturgy guild is actually split into two separate disciplines which worship the twins Nald and Thal. The guild that worships Thal (darkness, death, the god of the underworld) is the guild you join as a THM, the Arzzaneth Ossuary. The other is a Guild that is much more restrictive about accepting members, and isn't even labeled on the map in english (though it's there in Eorzean), the Milvaneth Sacrarium. This guild worship Nald (Light, Life, god of the overworld).

Thaumaturges in Eorzean lore are those who (like the fountain in front of the guild suggests) worship both these aspects of life and death.

That is insightful and something I've never considered....
