I believe FF14 is just a "see what you can do opportunity" for Yoshida, I would love to see him produce an MMO with the proper funding and proper size dev team because I think he has the idea's and he is no doubt an up and coming star for SE's future MMO endeavor's.

I think at the end of the day, this game is going to shut down. The dev.team can only do so much with the funding they have been given. SE can't just add 40things per patch, it has to fall within the budget allocated to FF14 which is why we're seeing slow progress because it has to be broken up into multiple patches to meet budget requirements.
I'm not so sure this is true. Of course, we are both just speculating, but I really think SE is taking the stance that letting XIV fail is not an option because it is part of the FF franchise and because they want to salvage their reputation. I'm sure keeping the game up and running for no monthly fee rather than closing down and going back to a closed alpha/beta state is quite expensive but it is a cost they are willing to eat to regain player trust and make xiv worthy of its number in the FF series.
