Azurymber, I hope to god that you find the answer you seek and find something else fairly important that the trolls in this thread will need in order to do something so that you can prove to them how karma can be a ***** to people when it comes around and goes around.

I'd like to know the answer as well, though I'll cheer Ishgard on either way in the end.

The only thing I know about ishgard is through the Archer R30 and R36 quests. For example Simian (sp) the guy you fight in the R36 Archer quest left the Quiver's Hold to joing some sort of Ishgardian army of some sort. Obviously in the R30 quest you have to go to Coerthes outside of Ishgard for some cutscenes (I forget the name of the area).

Other than that I assume the R46 final battle and cutscenes, those enemies are from Ishgard. Plus you will notice that on some of the faction leves the issuing authority is the Ishgard adventure guild. (Camp Glory and Dragonhead are included in these faction quests).

We can only assume when the pick up where R46 main quest left off, we will see that continuation in Ishgard so instead of having the merchant's wards in Uldah as a home base, the emphasis will switch to the capital city, much like 11 when you left your home city for Jeuno.

For Gridania I can only assume the battle between them and Ishgard left with Gridania in control of Black Shroud, no other quests like Lancer or Conjurer mentions a threat from Ishgard on the black Shroud, so my best guess is the Ishgard forces retreated to Coerthes. Moh Drona may have something to do with that as well.

Like others have said, we are going to have to wait to pick up on this storyline later.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it indeed isn't actually explained anywhere in the game for now.

Ishgard is not the main focus and indeed the game is lacking a bit in the lore department unless you really want to look for it, something sadly many people do not care at all because the plot sucks (And therefore "I" skipped every cutscene and dialogue! Because they suck!), the lore sucks (because we actually have to talk with the NPCs and gather information from different places!), and the game itself sucks (including the plot and lore, they suck! Also: No jumping.).

In any case, I'd expect a bit more about this and other tidbits of Ishgard related lore when we do get access to the big ol castle and are able to do sidequests there.

Uh.....they're obviously and surely from the Garlean Empire. Imperial troops patrolling Mor Dhona and securing their airships stationed there; the quest plan was to hijack one of the ships to reach Ala Mhigo and then probably start screaming about Captain Basch of Dalmasca. Then Grahf appeared and I'm still somehow mad he didn't appear on Dissidia Duodecim.

    Something like that.

I have to assume that Gridania was the victor. Only because it is still there. .

So is Ishgard, but they keep outsiders out.

Lots of people in this thread confusing Ishgard and Garlemald. Ishgard is a super-religious city state that has a bishop and knights and stuff. They hate dragons and they shut their gates like a year ago, not letting anyone in or out. A few NPCs in Owl's Nest talk about them.

Garlemald is the home of the Garlean Empire. They have robots and guns and destroyed Ala Mhigo like 15 years ago. In the r46 cutscene you meet Garlean Darth Vader

coerthas and ishgard are to the West of Gridania. Further West is what -seems- to be the land of the dragons (dravania) as well as what i'm assuming is either a city or a ruined city (shariavan). East of the twelveswood (gridania) is Ala Mihgo which has been defeated by Garlemond. And then the Garlean empire is northeast of Ala Mihgo. So essentially for the Garleans to successfully attack Aldenard and Vylbrand (I beleive those are the names of the continent and limsa's island respectively) they would have to first go through the Twelveswood and Gridania.

Now since Gridania has the protection of the elementals and the Twelveswood is supposed to be crazy wtf dangerous. Launching an attack would take a -SERIOUS- effort. However, tactically the Garlean Empire has airships and could essentially skip over gridania and land in ul'dah's region. I'm assuming airships are not a safe way to transport their military however due to the fact that one seems to have crashed in mor dhona and there are supposed to be dragons in the skies.
I'm also assuming they would have issues attacking via the sea due to the threat of Limsa amassing a fleet in order to protect trade routes if nothing else.

So im guessing if they were to invade it would have to be -through- Gridania and the Twelveswood. Possibly by burning it down.
