Less death penalties = more challenging encounters can be implemented.

The fact that you lose should be the punishment.

What do you lose? Maybe we should put a big dunce hat over your head for one real day to be effective?

So far it's just a coffee break to anyone dying.

You lose time. There is such a thing in the universe.

What was the difference with XI? When you died you got a 5 min break. but if you was a healer or tank the entire party took a 5 min break. Adding sp loss solves nothing but adds more problems. If nothing else the great possibility of an idiot or tech problem screwing your time invested over. I can understand there needing to be a stronger penalty for death but sp loss solves nothing.. As i stated in my previous post they can make it optional so all who feel this should happen can get all their sp loss thrills.

edit: I was never afraid to die in XI and wouldn't be in XIV if they added this stupid penalty. Whats the point though? For a more severe penalty? I wouldn't give a hacker my password and i don't want idiots being able to screw me over when they feel like it.

I'm just curious why there are so many people who want to impose their will upon me. I haven't heard a good reason for why SP loss is necessary. All I have heard is it makes the game more scary, for YOU.

You want to be punished when you die that's fine, some people are masochists and it is their own prerogative to find enjoyment in that. Why not impose your own sort of death penalty. You could delete a piece of gear, you could stop playing for about 20 minutes since that's probably how long it'd take to get your SP back. You could stick your hand on an over burner, you could starve yourself for 24 hours. Sure, I'm partly joking about some of these, but I haven't heard a relevant point as to why there needs to be punishment for others when they die.

I'll be brutally honest, if there was XP/SP death penalty I would only group with a small group of people I could trust, killing the easiest mobs I could for the best SP/hr and I wouldn't be attempting any fight that might end up in my dying. Is that what you really want, I don't think that's the intention of the players advocating SP loss, but I'm not sure they realize the true ramifications of it.

It's being done away with in most games recently because it is un-enjoyable and serves little purpose other than being archaic and nostalgic for a decade ago.

Than you have not read one of my postings.
It's about an overall feel of the world. Where people want to help eachother and where they are concerned about their own actions.
This effects not only heavily party play but also a general "don't care" attitude.
And that is in a world where the story is all about people need to join forces, help eachother because of a bigger threat.
In FFXIV people join forces to get more SP...where is the threat?

You lose the encounter in question, which may or may not have more consequences depending on the content itself. For more lighthearted content you don't lose much [time] but enough to set back your progress for a while. For less lighthearted content you may not be able to retry the event in question or you have to go all the way back to the start and climb up again.

It all boils down to [time] either way. You lose exp = you lose time needed to gain back that exp. You lose durability = you lose time needed to gain money and items to repair your equipment. Time is always the penalty, and this game gives you enough penalty for what kind of content there is available. When stakes get higher, the time lost will reflect that.
