I agree. That can't be the ONLY reason you do it. But it can be one of them. To be the best at whatever you do requires a very strict regiment to follow. That isn't something you would do for silly reasons, but shouldn't that be respectable? I think it should be respectable. That's my point. To not respect people who put time into something is wrong, especially when they are the best of the best.

Edit: I don't mean bow down to them. I mean at least they deserve a recognition. That is why some companies give special rewards to long-time workers. That is why you know people's names that you are not even familiar with. That is why your name will appear at the top of the list if you are ranked number 1.

Hun, if you saw or smelled my bowel movements, you would agree that I deserve awe and respect.

I don't see what would make me respect, admire, or fall down to my knees in front of someone just because he had a bunch of dudes stand around in game for a long periods of time (months?) waiting to fight AI monsters so that he could get a video game weapon...

And when there are so many vastly more impressive things to be 'the best of the best' of, nope, not going to respect some dude's shiny PvE MMO gear. Come on, how can you not see how lame that sounds?

You can respect the deeds and find the reasons totally stupid and not really respectable. Things are never black and white.
To do things just to be admired is pretty stupid in itself because it means you are totally dependent on the trends, saying one thing one day and the contrary the very next day.

The thing is myth weapon in FFXI is not a trend. It is forever and eternally the best gear in the game. What ARR and other current MMOs are now doing is making all the best gear a trend by releasing new gear with patches/expansions that makes everything else obsolete. Your point makes sense in that regard. I never said it was worth anyone's time to be admired in FF14 ARR to begin with because the game does not allow it; That is the problem. So... um what was the reason for Ash wanting to catch all the Pokemon? I want to be, the very best? Like no one ever was. Why did Naruto want to become a Hokage? He was clearly bashed by all his neighbors and classmates as a young child. He wanted to show them who's boss. Trends don't really play into what we are taking about, unless there is some massive change in how the world works, which is only possible in a virtual world by changing what MMO you play or updates/expansions. Like you said, it is not always black and white, but the reasons are not always stupid either, and the reasons for doing things ALWAYS evolve. They never stay the same; It might be for the ladies at first, but eventually you realize the more important reasons. And some people are blessed to be talented enough to keep going and excel to be number one in the world at the sport the participate in. But like you said, It is pointless to shoot for these almost impossible goals when they are trends. That is why I do not support this vertical system of expansion/updates that destroy any gear before it, and this myth system that just hands out Best in SLot gear like a social welfare machine which makes being max lvl a joke.

    Not really.
I already got a 50 in 1.0. It's just a thing that happens when you can't get any more experience.
Now, people who have stuff from really tough fights, I respect those people a bit more.

In a simple picture worth a thousand words....

The only respect I will ever give people are through their actions. It will never be from shiny sparkly gear because that stuff only proves you done the content but does not prove how skilled you are in that content.

Actions will always speak louder than shiny sparkly objects in MMOs

As of now I am just waiting for that Level cap raise through Major Update yoshi-p mentioned.

We can be competitive and strive to achieve greatness, but it won't have any real consequences outside of our own pride for having done something hard. No one's lifes are at stake (the NPCs are virtual, and so are our characters), nor anyone's money. That's where that attitude about "separate yourself" from someone else is wrong, as it's a separation in terms of "I'm your superior" and I'll never agree with that as a healthy way to compete. That's where my example comes in.

The best athlete will strive to improve him/herself, and compete against others as a way to measure their success. They don't want to show off or feel themselves superior to anyone else, nor they will try to change the rules so that they have fewer competitors. For example, in archery you don't think all the time "I have to beat that guy, I have to show everyone that I'm better than him", but simply "I have to make a perfect shot". It's just you and the dartboard, otherwise you'll be more likely to fail. That's what I aim to do in MMOs too, and I don't really care about what others can or can't do. I play hard content to improve myself, to have fun with other players, and for that feeling of acomplishment once I beat something. I don't really care if someone somewhere admires me for beating something or not, I just do what I think that's fun for myself and I try to be nice to everyone.
