And, now I'm wondering what type of stories people are making for their characters thanks to the comments on the thread. I'm all for making a gag comic setting, pin-ups (you just have to with Miqo'te and male Hyur Highlanders), and other random images and things with mine. If only I could draw better...

I'm off to edit my initial post!

I always tend to end up making stories for characters I really like, or if I'm just really into the game's world and story. Guess it's just the writer in me lol. I currently have 7 characters (though I'm not really playing most of them, just two atm), and I have basic groundwork laid out for their stories as well as rough ideas of their relationships with each other, though only one of them is a "warrior of light" at the moment.

It's just a way to get more attached to my characters and the game itself, thinking of stories and backgrounds for them all. I find it pretty fun, and it's a great way to give myself writing practice.

I was going to post what I thought but this is exactly what I was going to say, just with three more characters. /10char

I like to be as lore-appropriate with my name in games, as well as try to create a backstory (which I never usually share with people) for my characters, too.

In the case of L'yhan, I wrote his little blurb on the character section on the lodestone, which I'll cut and paste:

    Yhan: The White Viper

As tia of the L tribe, Yhan's driving ambition in his youth was to develop strength and prowess befit of a nunh. Unlike his sire, a skilled hunter and bowman, Yhan inherited the gifts of his mother, a shaman and healer of her clan.

Shadowed by his sire's strength of might, Yhan learned to wield the arts of conjury and magicks under the practiced eye of his mother. Soon, the young tia was known as "the White Viper," both for his deeds in extending L territory, and skill with curative spells.

Patient as the grass viper, the scalekin totem of the L, Yhan as tia headed to Eorzea to further his prowess in the manipulation of aether. It is his deeds in this realm as the Warrior of Light, blessed by Hydaelyn, that accelerated his claim as nunh.

It is now Yhan's desire to carve a slice of Eorzea as his clan's own, and it is here that he continues to battle and adventure in the Light of the Crystal.

I don't roleplay but I do like to have back stories for my character. Also sorry for the -I'm sure- bad presentation. Sick and tired.

As Shyaih grew up, her ideals and beliefs began to differenciate drastically from the rest of her family. They were all proud poachers, while Shyaih was always hesitant. As she matured, she started to feel a deeper connection with the nature around her. Strange as it seemed, she thought she could almost feel the forests anger as the rest of her family poached, day after day. When she would try and warn her family of the forests growing anger, they would laugh and call her a "shy hunter" - their way of calling her a coward. Her real name was Naih Viqqoh, but the differences between her and her family grew so strong, that she ended up leaving her family.

Upon on doing so, she changed her name to break any association with her family. Though she still cared for them, and didn't want to forget her origins. And so she re-named herself Shyaih Khizmet. Khizmet being a different spelling of kismet, meaning fate.

Despite their differences, Shyaih still shared the same deity as her family and kept up the practice of wearing face paint to be granted power from the Moon and Her Keeper. Along with changing her name, she changed the face paint markings that her family also shared.

She had attempted to go to Gridania, immediately wanting to throw herself into the art of conjury. However, she was denied entrance to the city despite informing the Twin Adder that she was no longer a threat, and was told if she didn't leave immediately she would become a prisoner.

And so she left to Ul'dah, hoping that in a few years time, she could make a big enough name for herself, that she would be allowed into Gridania to study conjury.

It's hard to have a backstory. With what the game forces you to do, it wouldn't make sense to have a backstory.

I think OP means strictly from a role-playing point of view, like a story you'd give out to friends to establish a basis for whatever it is you're RPing at the time.

Well, maybe I'm wrong, I've never been very good at roleplaying (more analytical than creative) so I can't judge on that aspect. I would like to create a story for my character some day though.

Oh no, my character's backstory might have had some tragedy in it, but I did that to provide an easy means of explaining why she was a Sunseeker without being tied down to a particular tribe (unfortunately, when I started writing Enki's backstory when I started in 1.0, there was actually zero information available about the Seekers of the Sun - the naming conventions and lore about the clan has only been released in the past year or so). She has a happy ending though which I'm still working on, involving my partner's character.

And you've put the thread in the right place - the earlier 'post your character's backstory' threads were all in General Discussion and hence were quickly lost under all the flamebait threads about house prices. It should remain intact and current here in Lore for a while at least.

I like what you've come up with so far, please, feel free to elaborate further on it!

Well, you don't need to have your character follow the main story in the game, and you can give them a story that is completely separate from it while still being in the same world. Personally, I'm not planning on using Nephie and the others for anything with a too serious, drama filled, or with dark settings too much outside of he occasional picture. It's mostly short one page comics like the 4-koma strips you can occasionally find in Japanese manga, but I don't know if I will commit to actually making anything, yet.

The only other character I have is based on my rather dashing Hyur Highlander retainer who would basically be taking care of the sisters in a perfect guy/butler fashion. He is always smiling, being a polite gentleman, and being dashing/smooth with a shining aura. He's supposed to be the type of character that is supposed to make you think "how nice, I want him to take care of me too", regardless of gender (hopefully). He works really hard and enjoys his job. I'd like to do comics of him to just show how diligent he is.

Seriously, I don't think people give their retainers much thought in the work they do.
