Your character's personal story...

I'm not too sure if a topic like this has already been posted, but I was wondering how many of you have ever thought of a backstory (related or unrelated to the main story) for your characters? For mine: she is one a pair of Miqo'te kittens that was found orphaned in the Black Shroud by a caravan of merchants and performers, which is to explain her name, and the other kitten is her younger sister who is a Keeper of the moon whom I want to use the Lalafel naming conventions for. Their last name was given to them by an archer that traveled with the group, but didn't seem to hail from Eorzea. I'm not sure of whether to make this person an Elezen or a Miqo'te, yet. My character comes to Gridania to make her debut as her own person starting with archery, and then leatherworking, which she comes to enjoy doing. Both of the girls can be a bit childish in some manner of their personalities, and I'm still thinking about how to characterize them, which all of this is fun.

Edit: BTW, bonus points for stating what type of story or materials that you would want to or wish to use with your characters and their story.

I think a lot of players have created their own backstories for their characters, particularly those who like to roleplay. There has been some threads on the subject in the past but sadly they've never really been popular and quickly get buried under a all the whine threads. This section is good for getting lore information you might need when creating your character's history so that it can 'fit' into the game's world properly and not seem tacked on.

And yes, I'm in the process of finalizing a long history for my character as well (I originally started in version 1.0, so I've made a lot changes recently due to new lore info coming out which contradicted or invalidated ideas I had planned sadly, all part of the fun though), so you're not alone here!

Yes, my character grew up along the coast in Northern Thanalan, but her village (and family!) were wiped out in the garlean invasion which led to there being a fort there, now.

I'd love to make up a background for my character, but I wish we had more lore for keepers.

I do, and did in xi, gw2, wow and will in eso too. I always have 2 chars and always play them as a brother/sister duo. I customize them to look like siblings and balance them so when I duo box they have jobs that fit together nicely. Unfortunately the battle system makes duoboxing incredibly difficult so I don't tend to play them as a team anymore.

Yep. While I don't really actively roleplay with others on my server, I have a complete backstory on my character, as well as her parents and siblings (Seeker of the Sun, she has a lot of half brothers and sisters), and make additions to it as I progress in the story. I did the same thing in XI, which helped make the story feel a little more interesting than "random adventurer saves the world".

I still need to get around to writing it all down one of these days and keeping track of when events happened.

I don't roleplay, but in every MMO I've played, I always make a it a point to flesh out my characters with a back story to enrich my overall experience and add life to that person I am controlling on the screen.

Gretchen is half Miqo'te, half midlander. She was raised by her midlander father and rogedyn stepmother on a farm in rural Gridania. She has a younger half-brother as well. Gretchen has a slight accent that can best be described as southern American (think DFW or Austin region). Told for her entire life her real mother had died, it will be revealed that her mother is, in fact, tied to either: 1. The Garlean Imperial Senate, or 2. The Theocratic Government of Ishgard. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to go with. Either way, it will furthermore be revealed that her father had fled with Gretchen when she was a very young child to escape whatever environment/situation her parents were involved in, and her mother is still presently active in. As dragoon is Gretchen's "main" job / path, it might make the most sense for the secrets of her family be revealed as she spends time in the Holy See of Ishgard as featured in the dragoon questlines.

When Aluena Mahri was young she was exiled in disgrace from her family and she became a poacher at the edge of The Twelveswood. She was eventually caught by an Old Hyur woman named Mary who took her in and, despite Aluena's hostility and arrogance, did her best to teach and raise her. Aluena eventually grew to respect Mary who was always patient and kind with her. 9 years after Aluena was taken in Mary passed away. Devastated by her loss Aluena forsake the name of the family who abandoned her and took Mary's name as a final respect to her caretaker and teacher. After some time Aluena registered to the Adventurer's Guild and began travelling. In her travels she discovered her strong passion for magic. Generally a very unsociable person Aluena rarely speaks her mind, still holding her memories of her old family's harshness towards her.
