Wait, so the CGI character that look like main characters are not really characters? Then who the old man that die? Just another representation of players? I thought those guys were like Aldo/Alto from FF11. You know the boy who survivied became an adventurer and afterward a ninja or something.

The adventurer party in the CG cutscenes is SE's representation of the players/adventurers. You can't actually meet them in game.

The old man (Elezen, actually) that died was Louisoix. He was a major NPC in FFXIV 1.0, and the leader of the circle of knowing before Minfilia took over. The broken staff on the wall above Minfilia's seat was his.
