If they're keeping people on the hook, they're doing a bad job of it. When Star Wars The Old Republic comes out, it will be a massive embarrassment for Square Enix. Know why? Let me give you some examples:

Wow! This game has so much content, and it hasn't even come out yet!
So many planets, dungeons and places to explore!
The content is so well thought out, it's immensely engaging!
These are the statements you will hear coming out of the SWTOR review crowds when it comes out. Imagine what FFXIV is like in the face of that kind of praise AND factual data: Right now, as we speak, SWTOR has an order of magnitude greater amount of content than FFXIV.

This should be enough of a reason for someone in Square Enix to commit hara-kiri, because quite simply, they did not use their heads. They did not get proper feedback from all the major MMO audiences. They were too insular, too internal.

The reality is this: MMORPGs are a community-heavy game genre, and if you're going to put a product on that market, you need to be engaged with the community that will spring up around your game. Square Enix has learned this difficult lesson, but I fear it will not stick long enough.
