Right now, fish sell for roughly the cost of the bait used to catch fish at their level, resulting in break-even for unsuable fish. I think this was a good move on SE's part; fish-botting was, indeed, a terrible problem in FFXI due to the high sale value of fish. Not saying that there shouldn't be more usable fish, but keeping their NPC value low was a good move, as was keeping the sale value low for almost all other items.

As for eating the fish for minor buffs, you COULD do that in FFXI - but only if you were Mithra (Miqo'te). Galka (Roegadyn) could eat raw meat. They could also eat Tarutaru (Lalafells), if the forum gifs were anything to go by.

Botting would be a good excuse to keep the usefulness down if mining/botany teleport botting weren't so incredibly common.
If it's already that easy to bot other DoL, then why does it matter if it would be easy to bot Fishing?

Because fish already sell for as much as BTN/MIN items do (maybe slightly less on a gil/time basis). Increase the vendor value of fish and now you have a new bot fountain causing even more trouble.

Sorry, I wasn't advocating for increasing the vendor price.
Just want more fish to be useful in any way.
There are hundreds of types of fish in the game, but less than 1/6 of those are actually useful in ANY way.
On top of which there are virtually no "endgame" fish with any value at all.

Back to my point though, if you increased the "value" of fishing somehow (not vendor prices) and botters moved from botany/mining to fishing, I just don't see how it would suddenly be worse than what's already happening.
It's already apparently so easy to bot mining/botany that tons of people are doing it. So it's incredibly doubtful that even more people would join in simply because it was fishing.
And if the same people that are already mining/botany botting simply move to fishing, then market prices for mining/botany items would rise and it would actually help legitimate miners/botanists.

I think Yoshi wanted to keep fishing "casual" because he was specifically worried about fishing botting (because it was so rampant in FFXI).
    And I completely agreed.
It was a valid concern to have if you also made the assumption that mining/botany would be difficult to bot.
But we now know that assumption was wrong.
So wrong that I believe the entire premise (to keep fishing casual due to fears of botting) falls apart.

I personally see nothing wrong with increasing the number of useful recipes that revolve around fish. It's a shame that most trout, bass, and even catfish (all common food fish) aren't even part of the Culinarian's recipe log. Caviar would also be a suitable recipe for something like the Emperor Fish.

There's nothing wrong with making Fishing a more casual class. It would be good for the game if more fish served an overall purpose.

My apologies, I assumed you were talking about gil value because of the post you quoted.

But I agree with the other posts. More fish CUL or ALC recipes would be nice.

I personally think it will be a nightmare navigating the recipe list for Culinarian, if there is a recipe for every fish...
It will be nice if we can use more than one kind of fish for some recipes though.

Like instead of a specific bass, all bass can be used...etc

Doesn't necessarily have to be all fish, but we have a ton of crabs, shrimp, or even a legendary octopus we don't use ...

Take advantage of other players' laziness; fish used in fishing quests are valuable.

You could sell Mazlaya Marlins for 3,000 a piece at one point. It's an easy catch at Bloodshore too.

Well - considering it's double mooch it's not really that much easy catch so for some there might be better way to invest the time / make 3k faster elsewhere. For 3K you can do one or two quick melds or craft in few minutes a bunch of mid-range products and take the RNG out of equation completely.
