First off, lay off the word troll, only trolls call others troll, plus saying troll is like saying Groovy, it's just old and done to death, no longer effective and just makes the user of the word troll just come across as lame/immature.

Secondly, there is a real solution to people who do what I quoted above; Stop healing them, when I go as WHM, if someone pulls that crap, I don't heal them, let them die and tell them (in party chat) that I will not heal them until they cut the crap (so the others know why I'm letting the tank die.) That usually works and if it doesn't, let him die a couple more times before bringing up the Kick From Party option. If you're not a WHM/SCH, then just tell the healer to stop healing the jackass and most of the time they will listen (they are just as annoyed at the jackass as you are, but usually are too shy/non-confrontational to do anything about it, all they need is 1 person to tell them and they are usually on board.) I do the same thing when I do low-level dungeon runs, if the tank doesn't want to go after the chests, I tell them that I will not heal them during the bosses until the chests are picked up. Just cause they don't want the chests, doesn't mean other party members don't. I've been playing FFXI for 11 years now, FFXIV from launch until servers went offline and ARR since the alpha, my tolerance for people who act like jackasses ingame is non-existent at this point and that's not gonna change.

I know every MMO will have its community of trolls, but this is just getting out of hand lately.
Nothing new under the sun. It's the classic "Human Condition", congratz on realizing you're a human being!

I did my first CT run yesterday. I came out of there thinking I had just been in one of WoW's battleground. One of my FC members had a vote kick on him twice, both failed. One for harassment and a second for afk.

Having CT on duty find was the worst idea since loot lockout.

Man, I am sooo happy that I've been blessed by the RNG gods with CT so far. I've only done it three times and each time has been a pleasure.

I don't want to derail the thread, but has anyone considered its a cultural thing? For example I live in Europe and I've encountered nothing but lovely , helpful players. Maybe try playing during a different regions prime time and see if its just, for the sake of example, the north american players that are douchebags?

Imo, it comes down to the topic of Fun.

The more fun a game is, the better it's community and the less trolly it is. Once the fun factor is drained from the game people that were enjoying it turn into trolls. They sit around socializing and trolling. They are only running content at all because of the gear factor. If they don't cap myth, they lose it because there is no roll over, or make up myth system. If they don't get a piece of gear from CT they also lose it. As such they continue to play and run content event though they are not enjoying it because they don't want to miss out on their myth and loot in the event an expansion or patch comes out they can have fun with again. Because it's not fun, and just a grind, they are more prone to acts of rage and have lower patience for anything outside the realm of perfection.

As to why people play a game that's not fun to them, that's a topic worthy of many books and professional lectures and examinations. I for one think it comes down to the economy and depression. Some people just can't afford to go out and do things anymore, gas is to high, eating out is outrageous, etc etc. And of all the games, this one might be the best to be playing for them. E.g. I hate wow, I don't necessarily love FFXIV, but I like it more than Wow.

Smartphones and social networking are removing the humanity from communication. This is resulting in society becoming more and more sociopathic.

Anonymity brings out the worst in humans.

You mean just like how everyone reading a newspaper on the bus in the 80's did the same thing? You can't just blame technology for alienating people because things are plainly just not that simple.

People being assholes in games is really nothing new, unfortunately. You usually see them less in new games because communities start off as blank slates and it's up to players to create the norm in terms of what behaviors are encouraged and discouraged. People that behave like assholes will always be there, but when you see more and more of that behavior not being discouraged, then more people will naturally be encouraged to act in this manner because it's not frowned upon.

You'll always have a higher chance of seeing these types of people in the DF because they rationalize that they're playing with people they'll never see ever again, so it doesn't matter how they behave.

TLDR: Technology isn't what discourages good behavior, it's anonymity.

I'm not sure if there's even any use for it. I tried kindling my campfire but my Elixir flask didn't get any bigger.
