You mean just like how everyone reading a newspaper on the bus in the 80's did the same thing? You can't just blame technology for alienating people because things are plainly just not that simple.
People being assholes in games is really nothing new, unfortunately. You usually see them less in new games because communities start off as blank slates and it's up to players to create the norm in terms of what behaviors are encouraged and discouraged. People that behave like assholes will always be there, but when you see more and more of that behavior not being discouraged, then more people will naturally be encouraged to act in this manner because it's not frowned upon.
You'll always have a higher chance of seeing these types of people in the DF because they rationalize that they're playing with people they'll never see ever again, so it doesn't matter how they behave.
TLDR: Technology isn't what discourages good behavior, it's anonymity.
