I'd still rather have that same ruthless player destroy me in PvP where there is no real consequence than steal my drop or fuck me over in some PvE scenario.

I agree, although it never really bothered me getting ganked unless I was on right before work trying to get something done quick. It was just a counter point. As long as there is arena PvP eventually I'll be satisfied. In FF though, with NMs thankfully being a large part of the game it probably would piss me off.

Duels, yes. Open world, no-restrictions PvP absolutely not. I'm fine with PvP as long as there is no ganking and no griefing. I remember trying to do quests in certain areas in Aion and it was downright impossible some days. Certain players would hang out in specific areas and never leave, just griefing people trying to actually progress.
Structured, consensual PvP I am 100% okay with and I even welcome it. I prefer group PvP personally, sieges were actually some of the most fun I had while playing Aion. Duels I'm perfectly fine with too, agreeing to fight under certain terms.

That's quite a generalization my friend. I was here in Alpha, Beta and Live (your should see my forum post count from beta). FFXI for 7 years despite the lack of PvP and my love for PvP. I don't have a big mouth and I do care more for the balance of PvE than PvP. PvP onry people will get their satisfaction on CoD or battlefield if not in an MMO. That's what I do, run some quests/missions/events take a break to pop off some headshots in Battlefield and then back to grinding XP. Not the end of the world. Though I probably could kick your butt :P

I started the day of launch after playing beta in Aion so I was 50 before most and had already picked up PvP experience so I didn't really fall victim to it in say Eltnen or Heiron. I certainly dished it out in Morehiem & Beluslan though. It was epic fun for us. Our legion would have drunken rifting night every Friday during which we usually just ended up giving AP to the inhabitants. It was funny, there were comments on our profile pages saying things like "Only go after him on Friday night, other days of the week run" until NC axed commenting. I digress.Duels, yes. I agree with you. Unrestricted open world PvP would be very bad for FF playerbase. I like the idea of a open zone PvP though. Like Aion's Abyss but with no quests, instances, dungeons or critical need to be in that zone. Some time killers would be cool maybe like optional levequests or mobs that could be farmed for usable materials. NOT! Critical items like, say Blood Stains for any other Aion players.

I'd be open to a no restrictions PvP zone as long as, like you said, there was nothing critical there that you needed to have to progress. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to get something done only to have your progress come to a screeching halt because of a few dicks who feel like griefing people.

I'm sure there will be no ganking, at least I can tell from just this thread. I think the best thing would be a /duel option personally I like pvp to see if my build can beat my friends builds and /duel is great for this.
In XI you had to do a lot of work just to duel your friends, so I never pvped hardly. All other pvp I don't mind as long as it's not reward motivated, or the rewards aren't unique to just pvp, otherwise it'd be almost like you had to pvp to fulfill other basic motivations of an mmorpg (like gear attainment to further customize your char). Before anyone gets upset about this think about it there are lots of things they could reward you that wouldn't force others to pvp, like guildmarks, gil, or what about if you could take some of your opponents anima for winning, along with a ranking board.
As for another idea that I think is pretty unique, they should have a tower type game where you can go in solo or in a party and it can have many stages (possibly infinite) and you see how far your group can get and you can sp that way or something while the top groups or players of the tower are posted in game for fun.
It's not directly pvp but it creates a sense of competition that some might even call a PvEers PvP.

This game's engine and server lag is too poor for PVP.
Arena please thanks.
I'm not a troll I'm just the voice of truth :P
I found one great comment about pvp in mmos I thought I will share ;D
"Who cares if a game has pvp balance? Balance in mmo pvp is one of the dumbest things.
I'm a wizard who can call down demons and hellfire to melt my enemies. You're a plucky young warrior with a broadsword. Of course its fscking imbalanced!
Or... I'm a drooling idiot who keyboard turns and you memorized sun tzu, have the latest and greatest gaming mouse and macro keyboard. Again, it's going to be imbalanced.
You want balance in your pvp, play with your xbox."
