Actually, it's a way to kickstart the economy.
Everyone will try to gather, but that will drive the prices down too low. So people will try to make gold with crafting.
It will either be furniture or things that other crafters need or even end products which will see a new surge due to the patch release.
The gathering prices will then go back up to some extent and the economy will start running much better than it did before when gil wasn't really a thing.
Furniture will be in high demand for the people actually able to afford the housing.

This won't work for legacy so much, of course. But all the other servers may actually have a more functional economy than it did before the patch.
