What I miss is the coherency open-world dungeons give the game. Instances feel just like their namesake, separate from the world they exist in. I mean, I know where Amdapor Keep "is", but the way you enter it (especially in the DF), and the fact that you can barely see it's exterior in the South Shroud, remove some of the immersion. Wanderer's Palace is quite similar in this regard. I can see the palace from multiple locations (cool), but the part where we actually adventure in seems to be disconnected to the main structure. Where's the actual entrance, why doesn't the dungeon extend upward into the giant palace, etc.? Even Castrum Meridianum and The Praetorium feel disconnected to the larger world because of how the zones are laid out.

Eorzea is supposed to be a continent, but in all honestly, it smacks of an island no bigger than the UK.

That's also probably why blm went from how it was in XI, to just spamming 1-3 spells in XIV, no using different spells on different mobs, no MB, infinite mp, today's gamers can't handle anything more than that it seems.

No matter what people say or how they claim to have "hated XI", we all know what we really wanted was XI with XIV's graphics. Some people say a game like how XI used to be wouldn't work today, but from how mmos are going, no one has Thal's Balls to try it, they just keep chucking out the same thing every time. Not sure why SE went the WoW route, when they have a game that's lasted over a decade(and still bringing in money) they could have used for ideas, considering all these games that play/feel like WoW end up dying in a year or so (not saying XIV will, just an example that most do)
I'd play a version of ffxi with ffxiv graphics! I'd love to see more of an influence from XI into this game rather than the BS warcrap were getting. I loved so many elements of XI...including the open world dungeons like the castle oz with the yagodo tribes hoping to snag an astral ring from a coffer. Ahhh don't get me started on ffxiv's lame coffer hunts...for class quests.

Yes because spamming the correct elemental spell on a target then running out of mp and healing for 5 minutes was so deep and fun. FF11 game play was boring as hell give me an active rotation and stuff to dodge any day over the zzz of ff11 combat only thing that was remotely fun for me soloing on blu and rdm. I agree they could mix in some challenging open world pop item bosses with a free company leave system.

Pre-abyssea was nothing like this. Right now, these "elemental spells" you mention right now are honestly no better, with a rotation of two spells. Not to mention one of the stronger elemental spells in the series (Thunder, really?) is simply a DoT? What happened to Choke, Shock, Burn ect? It's just tiny things like this.

Don't even get me started on "roles". I think if roles were removed from the game entirely, the jobs in this game would start to get more of their job identities back. But that's for another thread/discussion.

There are a lot of elements from XI that are best left to history. That doesn't mean that some elements of XI and "classic" games aren't still fun. I don't think that simply remaking XI with updated graphics would be very popular. The menu system alone was /gag.

Even so, there are examples of EQ, XI, and even BC and prior WoW open world dungeons and areas that were lots of fun.

I don't know about you, but I got excited when I ran across stronghold... but then it turned out to not really be a dungeon. I was sad.

I think as long as it is optional, then it's not a problem. There is a big difference between a required dungeon that can be contested or have roadblocks that requires a party that is hard to find... and just an open world dungeon for exploration. Required dungeons like that are a barrier to new players, and a total headache. Optional dungeons are a nice diversion for groups to explore.

Wow, those are some sweet ruby glasses. FFXI BLM casted Blizzard because crabs, crawlers, raptors, and almost every level mob was weak too it. Yes on rare occasions you casted Thunder MB but it was mostly Blizzard. Don't even get me stared on "roles" because the player base said they wanted class uniqueness hence job were born. FFXIV was actually built from player feedback and if you don't believe me, check out the polls from early 2011 when Yoshi-P first took over.

Mine's about to get there soon lol Though I've cleared out some of the deleted ones, they keep popping back up. Almost a full blacklist and it hasn't even been half a year, that's crazy. 8 years of XI and a few years of some other mmos and I've never had to blist anyone

I miss the open dungeons if only because as it is it seems like Eorzea as world is a pretty much not worth exploring. For dungeons we need not be near the actual location and once you've visited a spot once you may not ever see it again. Duty Finder as a tool is useful but it really kills the feeling that we have a world outside of instances.

To me that makes the community see each other as disposable. Coil is the only content thus far that actually integrates players on the same server. Some might argue we can always make our own parties, which we do, but people do tend to take the path of least resistance - DF.

You know, I really hope we get Strongholds soon... There is some concept art of the Amalj'aa Stronghold, and you can already see it (that huge tower)... Would be great if it functions similarly to the Strongholds in Wings of the Goddess; several NMs to camp, each dropping items used to enter an instance in the area. The NMs were on fairly fast respawn timers, and there was enough of them that several groups could camp, from what I remember. Heck, some were soloable, even pre-Abyssea. It would make for a great sense of community currently missing from XIVs Free Companies, currently nothing has an entry requirement like that (I wish Primals would). There's no "Who has the pop items?" or anything close, just hit the Duty Finder and be done with it... I guess Treasure Hunts might come close, but I don't really expect anything stellar in terms of rewards from that...

Probably too much to expect this to be in 2.1 to go with the Amalj'aa Dailies... There's also a place called Goblet Butte on FFXIVDBs Map Viewer, which could be this place...

I like the non que/untimed type dungeon style the most as well. I think it would be great if we had both rather than one or the other. Exploring for the first time and getting past the mobs as they scale up is a good challenge. It is fun to go back after leveling up and progressing farther than you went before.
