Aaand herein lies the problem with all these ridiculous threads. Once again we have someone comparing a game with 5 years of level capped content to one with 3 months of it. It honestly AMAZES me that it still needs to be pointed out how terribly skewed this comparison is, and how insane the expectation is as a result.

Why do people so completely and utterly lack perspective?

1-75 BLM in FFXI took me 7 months with casual playing. FFXIV 1-50 took me 2 weeks with casual playing.
Do I want to have it like back in 2004? HELL NO! am I happy now, hell yes !

The original poster actually talks about this in his first post, the same one you quoted that line from.

Don't mind him, he hasn't played FFXI since like 2004 since everytime someone brings up SMn he says SMN is a healer in FFXI which hasn't been true since 2003.

He loves to "prove people wrong" whenever someone brings up FFXI as well and tell them they lack perspective.

It's sad a lot of people seem to want to not only miss the point of OP, but actually argue the opposite point he was making. But since it did contain a lot of words, I think it could be better paraphrased as such:

Playing FFXI made me feel that there was a full world to explore with many different paths or options in how to progress. In FFXIV, at present, there seems to be a very linear path to progression. In FFXI there was always the need to travel the world to do things. In FFXIV, with duty finder, I rarely need to go anywhere to do anything.

Is the mechanism for very strict linear progression, and lack-of-need-to-travel in FFXIV the long term goal of this game, or only how it is now and we can expect change over the coming months/years?

I would also like to add (for those FFXI haters), that there is also a difference from FFXIV 1.0 to 2.0. In 1.0 I would have to travel to dungeons (2.0, I sit in room). In 1.0 I had several options for end game equipment (no X is clearly better than Y for every situation), in 2.0 this is not the case. Is this a trend, or just a temporary thing?

Three years not three months...sorry but to be realistic without 1.0 there would be no way this game would have been completed so fast.

^ As much as one would deny it, Yoshida himself said ever since he took over in December that anything done to 1.x would be groundwork (or framework) for 2.0 (ARR) - So in reality, they could have actually done a bit more given those circumstances.

Maybe the only person who actually read OP.

Right now FFXIV's content is comparable to what FFXI had right after Rise of the Zilart: we had the city missions, AF gear quests, Dynamis and Sky, a handful of Burning Circle Notorious Monsters and the ground kings, and a few miscellaneous things like Expeditionary Force which nobody did. I'm pretty confident ARR is outpacing its elder sibling in terms of content.

It's really disingenuous to try to collapse seven years of FFXI into some homogenous "pre-Abyssea" experience or to pretend that it had some rich open world that FFXIV doesn't. As an endgame 75 in Zilart era, you followed a strict path of EXP camps to get to 75, then logged in to do Dynamis once every three days and hung out in Sky if you had a shell that could compete there. You weren't traipsing around the countryside.

All the time in the world won't fix incompetent design. They've decided to go the route of total linear progression, making everything except the latest content irrelevant, and then nerfing everything old so new/casual players can bypass it faster in order to get to the relevant content. They believe in it and they are sticking to it. You can either accept it or don't.
