you are quite right, there's probably not as many as i said playing. Do we have access to the numbers to be certain though? sadly no... I just hate when people say 'millions of players' as that's just not a realistic target for an mmo to aim for. Certain ones managed to get to a million players, these were usually free mmos, or their subscriber base dwindled swiftly after a couple months.
WoW is top dog in the numbers (Publicly, there are plenty of unsung games that hail much larger active playerbase. Blizzard can afford to advertise), but even they don't actually publish their active numbers, just subscriptions, this includes alt accounts, gold sellers that haven't been caught, and as was found out by gaming news sites a few years back, they used to include frozen accounts, as they were not technically cancelled.
And I quote the first trailer on the official FFXIV website:
"Nestled in a far corner of Hydaelyn
Battered by restless seas
Lies a realm over which the twelve hold vigil"
Hydaelyn being the name of the world.
"And so, seeking glory and greatness,
riches and renown,
we set out for this land
Eorzea..."
Yes, in the lore, there ARE other continents besides the one we're on. But the continent we play on right now is Eorzea.

i was there when the phrase was coined, noob lol our discussion was based on a ffxi with better graphics, that includes races and story and everything else that was in ffxi not just the mechanics
99.9% of statistics are made up on the spot O.oreading the constant whines of the fanboys on these forums has risen my temperature! the forums are being overrun by their arrogance and ignorance. instead of embracing tried and true mechanics from the game's predecessor (FFXI) they instead abruptly reject them without giving a logical reason or proposing anything that's better.
fanboys are toxic;
1] you like the game in it's current state so everything is rosie.
2] you don't like the game in it's current state & don't want FFXI-2, basically not knowing what you want.
3] you say that ffxi sucked, despite being a subscriber to it for years.....
4] you defend the blatant copy-pasted world by saying every mmo does it.
5] you defend the boring-as-hell 1-1-1-1-1-3-1-1-4-2 battle system.
6] you defend the economy-killing & bland armory system that does not allow for uniqueness all because you want to play dress up doll with your mancats.
7] you enjoy teleporting everywhere instead of traveling in a dangerous world.
8] you think ffxi party system is "old and tiresome" so you would rather kill 468 squirls, by yourself.
9] you don't want a death penalty or risk vs. reard system because it's more fun racing and exploiting to max level being invincible.
10] you simplify it all by saying the game just needed more content when in fact the far majority quit before they reached level 20, obviously not caring to see any more content.
11] you think lifeless market wards are better that a full fledge AH structure.
90% of the subscriber base has long quit for the exact reasons you see in front of your screen whenever you log into the game...these same reasons you are trying to defend. the ones still playing are only doing so because the game is free.
FFXIV was purposely designed to avoid everything that defined FFXI. it is a general statement (and factually correct one) of why it died, hard. demanding a continuation of what killed FFXIV is insanity.
Well personally everyone constantly griping that this game is getting worse and is already fail. Personally it all comes down to opinion. I for one enjoy the game and the people I play with and like the direction it is going in. I would still play even if we had to pay now. This game does need things from FFXI, but it also does not. Finding the in between point is what will define this game and will determine whether it sticks or not. That is all there is to it.
It is not the quantity of friends you have that determines your worth, its the quality of friends that does.
what a retarded thread.
you were where and you spoke with who, the developers? lol.
you don't understand, child. there can never be a FFXI with better graphics because that platform is married to the PS2 hardware. FFXIV was the only logical progression for the MMO.
FFXI-2 is a word that implies the mechanics that made FFXI great were to be carried over to the new world along with improvements to these mechanics.
I'd like to use Pokemon: Black as an example to support the original poster.
They used everything from the previous game, plus added new mechanics and other subtle treasures. Some trainers now heal your pokemon in the middle of a dungeon, there are some 3D cutscenes, there is a lot of side-content (think- Golden Saucer from FF7) and so on. They simply built on previous games, and yet, it's a whole new experience because they balanced Pokemon types and attack types while adding new competitive elements (3 v 3 battle and Wonder Room teams). This is all SE needs to do. Build on the basics of what made FFXI succeed and incorporate a few fresh spins on how to improve them. Trying to do everything new and ignoring everything players wanted and approved of did not work. It's time that they at least try and see if we knew what we were talking about.
