So you automatically like every equipment with good stats?

In that case there shouldn't be a problem. You wear said equipment to get good stats on equipment you like to wear, making this system better than anything else.

Or, as was mentiooned, you can simply buy the materia.

Call it what you will this sounds like the exact same process as "Trial of the Magians" with a new name.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Again, the system should not incentivize the wearing of B-grade gear just to turn it into materia.
That'd generate a bunch of gimps showing up to the SP group with their trial weapons.
And that is counter-spirit to Matsui's new battle emphasis of rewarding effort and innovation.

The goal of the system is to eliminate GARBAGE gear.
The mechanism can't be that everyone wears that GARBAGE gear around to everything they do.

We WANT a system where a crab bow NQ isn't a very stellar bow, and a player that shows up with a NQ crab bow should have a harder time succeeding than one who shows up with a +2 or 3.

Matsui's toughened battle system+players bringing their trash out to party with=people getting sent back to town when they show up gimp to party.

I didn't allow trial weapon use in xp parties in XI, and I was pretty forgiving. I'm not going to tolerate someone showing up with a trash weapon and trash gear just so they can leech some sp and grow their materia.

And a stupid system that makes you do skill up sessions just so you can grow materia is archaic and inferior.

Just don't require that the attachment be on a piece of equipment that you wear. There is NO point in doing so.

Now people are whining about how a materia system will be a chore? The amount of QQ on this forum is getting a little disturbing.

How about this, a MRD is trying to be DRK and uses DoW gear (melee stats) and adds magic stats with materia. Its not like a lot of DoW gear has a whole lot DoM stats, this is another way to add versatility to the game.

Yeah... you know if that 'other game' didn't let you disenchant your crap greens to enchant your epics with until after you wore them around for a while, there would be a lot of cranky players.

I'm not going to complain about a system that doesn't even exist yet, but if this is the intended design, I think it needs some more work at the drawing board.

Considering the details we do know are scarce, give it a little time before you pass judgment on the system before we even know exactly how we'll have to go about it. For all we know, growing the "bond" with your weapon to be able to upgrade it might be something that comes naturally during, for instance, Raptor grinds.

I do agree with the first part of your post though, garbage gear needs to be eliminated quick. And, considering all we have in the game is garbage stat-wise (barring Dodore Doublet lol?), it'd be a big step in the right direction.

i personally think this system sounds really fun.
even if i get my uber super cool weapon, ill some day be able to convert it to some above average (im probably being too optimistic) materia and equip it to my newer more uberer weapon. id just keep it as my main weapon till that time comes, and if i can have two, then hell ill convert one and keep the other.
as far as people showing up to parties gimped and stuff, well i can see that happening however i think some parties might form more designed for that and parties for actual leveling/gear. the reason why is because there will always be people who like the highest numbers they can pump out and doing so would require optimal gear, not grade B gear.
so basically i can imagine that it wont be this big chaotic mess of players ONLY swinging crap weapons around, in time players may actually work this very easy to understand system.

Even if wearing gimp gear is promoted with this system the community can always like trail weapons reject people wearing crap gear. Tearing up your materia sounds more like a solo activity anyways.
