    I dislike the term 'Materia'.

    This is a term that feels exclusive to FFVII and just doesn't fit into the FFXIV scheme. This new system will not be the same as FFVII's Materia system, and should not be named so. It would make more sense to use something that ties it into FFXIV's aetheryte.

    Some suggestions in this thread have been made such as:

    * Aethecyte
    * Aethercite
    * Aetheria
    * Aetherstone
    * Aethergem
    * Aethershard
    * Aetherlith
    * Magicite

    And those are just a few from this thread. There are many many options.

    Other aspects of Final Fantasy have remained throughout the series, but have gone by other names, to keep them appropriate to the story. Such as the avatars (summons, espers, guardian forces, primals, etc).

    I would rather see this system adopt a name more unique to FFXIV that will help it fit in with the game and story. Materia just does not fit.

    Please consider changing the name of this system!

    How about we get a bit more info on exactly what the system 'does' do before getting that conclusion?

    Just slotting magical 'bits' is exactly what Materia is... the defining point will be what do those bits 'do'? And yes, if they're just stat boosts, I'll be right there with you in pushing to have the name changed from Materia to Magicite or whatever.

    But if you allow Magicite as an option, then Materia is just as valid, in the very least until we know exactly what these things do.

    ... and honestly, most of those other names are just conjunctions taken from the Aetheryte crystal in this very game, which may well have absolutely 'nothing' to do with this system.

    Edit: I may have come off a bit... snarky . All I'm against is changing it simply for the sake of changing it. If it gets changed to something else, that something else had better have a meaning behind it, which likely isn't going to be something we can connect with at this point.

    I rather call it Aethercite.

    You may not be able to convert your pick into materia, but hopefully you should be able to add materia to your tools.

    Would you rather it were called magicite? :P

    At any rate, it has potential, I think we should let them have time to play it out.

    Yep, I suggested there could be different types of catalysts as well. Such blue catalysts that only work with blue materia, red catalysts that only work with red materia, rainbow catalysts that work with any color materia but the drop rate is super low.

    Gold ore is rank 50. Doesn't stop pion gatherers from getting their hands all over it. Even if they do put ranks on the catalysts, the ranks would have to be 60 and 70 for the relevant ones.

    I really like this idea. But it sounds like crafters have to be present to attach materia to the equipment.

    I like the idea of keeping crafters involved in the process, but if they could produce an item that anyone could use to attach the materia to the equipment, this would be much less cumbersome. It's never fun trying to hunt down a crafter when you need something done. And as a crafter, i much prefer being able to craft and sell while i'm away or offline.

    SE's biggest failing with gold was making gold sand drop like candy. I've probably mined up less than a stack and a half of gold ore on my way to almost 44. I just hope gold nuggets go the way of steel. 4x gold sand/ore + something else and make that something else a bit rare. Otherwise the 50+ goldsmithing market is dead before it begins.

They should have NOTHING to do with what is done to crab bows. Not even close, they need to come back when they're a REAL miner, not a dabbler.

    Rank 35 crafters have nothing to do with R40+crafting markets, and yet R35 gatherers can spam R60 level materials that crafters can't even use yet. No. Not more of that.
    It's even worse than that. I pretty much stopped mining when a horde of rank 1 to 10 players got White Stainsand before I could at a Grade 5 node. At the time I was rank 41.

    It felt the same as if a zerg of rank 1 to 10 DoW/M could come along and kill the high rank NMs. That is to say, made it feel completely pointless ranking up miner.
