OP, the WoW enchantment/enhancement system is HORRIBLE. That is why it is being changed soon. I hope FFXIV never racks up that many customization options.

While the Item team realizes you’d like to see more uses for materia in amplifying item stats, they clarified that there are currently no plans to change the stat caps. The way the system works, each item follows a hierarchy and adding materia to any item, while improving its stats, will not change it to an item above its level.

I think it would've been nice to actually have a designated "materia melding" craft class.. If you have multiple jobs that use different types of gear you'll need to level up 3-4 different crafts just to meld materia to a specific piece. Too much time investment.
Probably too late now, but would've been a nice craft class to have.
What is this obsession with being able to do everything yourself? Is it really that hard to make some friends in an LS or an FC that can meld them for you?I think it would've been nice to actually have a designated "materia melding" craft class.. As someone who fishes 90% of the time, I have zero crafting classes above 20, and yet a lot of my gear is melded. I just ask friends.
I miss 1.x for that. It felt like we were closer to a true community because people relied on other people. Now it's just "I want to do everything myself!"
Dude kept spam socketing like a doofus. I never did that and never had a problem with socketing at all. Imo the Aion socketing/enchanting system is way better.
EDIT:
Here is a video of how bad it was/is in AION hahaha.... THE RAGE!

Way to take a harmless suggestion and turn it into a sour message about the community hahaWhat is this obsession with being able to do everything yourself? Is it really that hard to make some friends in an LS or an FC that can meld them for you?

You didn't stop to think about the other side of things like: "oh maybe those people/"friends" of mine who melded my gear actually wanted to level all crafts so that they could be helpful to people like myself who just fish all day"
that and some people live for crafting so having another dedicated craft might be more fun?

Time is money, shouting to find people, wasting people's time to fail a 7% meld and much more
Much easier to do it yourself
Could you please give us some more insight on the item hierarchies in 2.1? Specifically:
- What is the relative strength between iLv80 Crystal Tower gear and the corresponding iLv70 HQ overmelded gear?
- Will there be better crafted gear for PvE in 2.1?
- If yes, where would it be positioned? Slightly worse than the Crystal Tower drops or slightly better if over-melded?
- If not, what are your plans for end-game crafting for PvE battle content?

― Ernest Hemingway
It would be nice it there was a button to click or some way of checking the exact stat caps of a given item BEFORE trying to affix materia.
I hate having to more or less guess at it and then accidentally buying a grade of materia that's too high for the item - particularly when the caps are wildly different even among items of the same level.
Materia feel 100% forgettable.
I didn't even bother with them until I was 50 and even then it was because I needed them for the stupid relic weapons.
This system is just bad.
