While the Item team realizes you’d like to see more uses for materia in amplifying item stats, they clarified that there are currently no plans to change the stat caps. The way the system works, each item follows a hierarchy and adding materia to any item, while improving its stats, will not change it to an item above its level.

Could you please give us some more insight on the item hierarchies in 2.1? Specifically:
    1. What is the relative strength between iLv80 Crystal Tower gear and the corresponding iLv70 HQ overmelded gear?
    2. Will there be better crafted gear for PvE in 2.1?
      • If yes, where would it be positioned? Slightly worse than the Crystal Tower drops or slightly better if over-melded?
      • If not, what are your plans for end-game crafting for PvE battle content?

it might be nice to have the option to display what the caps for an item are so that when melding it does not take forever to find what stats can be modified.

    The materia system is perfect.

Just need to up the play with tier V materia and higher level items that can be melded.

Why even have stat caps, if you wont tell us what these caps are! (Having to use google to *try* and find the correct caps is beyond a joke...)
Not a joke, and its very simple to understand. If an item has Vitality on it you dont meld vitality to it. Very simple.

Some items with set stats can still be melded with that stat. Some items with Crit for example, can still take some Crit melded, but you don't know until you try.

Once you work out what stat you can use, you do not know how much of it you'll be able to meld. Thus you cannot plan your melds. i.e. You meld Crit IV (+9) onto an Astral ring, you then try to meld Crit III (+6), but then you find out the crit cap is +12, so you would have saved a lot of gil buy just melding 2x Crit III.

Unless you actually *know* the stat caps per item, you cannot plan your meld, your basically taking a shot in the dark.

Hence you need to Google for stat caps and hope you don't accidentally end up on a site that looks to be helpful, but is actually trying to steal your game passwords.

A simple tool tip with stat caps would make melding much better for everyone.

After you've done a little bit of melding, it's actually very easy just to look at a piece of gear and know the materia caps. I had no problem planning out my melds on my Vanya/Astral gear just by looking at the natural stats. That said, a tooltip would be lovely.

I don't want more stat treadmill nonsense like currently makes up the entirely of the end game. I want an interesting system. Give us materia that apply secondary effects to auto attacks, materia that alter how certain spells work ({All} Materia, anyone?), materia that actually do neat things instead of "Yay...higher stats. Again. /snore"

Then can you at least display the information on stat caps in item descriptions so it's easier to discern? Nothing's worse than preparing some high-end materia and catalyst and finding out you can't even make any use of it.

What about materia that add elemental effects or auras and materia that enhance skills like in diablo 3 where instead of a Black Mage Using Fire and only throwing one ball the black mage does a rapid fire of 3 balls, it does the same damage it just looks and acts different or a White Mages Medica with a special materia Medica will have the ability to be casted on a selected party member instead of the WHM or it causes an AOE puddle of pure glowing water under the WHM that other party members can run on top of to get a "healing over time" effect while in the puddle.
