But what about my friends that are offline? This way they'd have a shiny present waiting for them when they logged on!

lol. well we have to keep in mind they're not running on our schedule, they're trying to get back the lost players. which is good overall i guess.
There's zero need for mail and mailboxes.
Just add the functionality to retainers. You summon your retainer at a Bell, add an item to a new section, let's call it 'Delivery'. You type in the name of the person to send it to, and off it goes. The person receives a notice, and when they check their retainer, they now have the items in the Delivery section of their retainer.
Exact same functionality as mailboxes, but expands on existing systems without adding unnecessary and superfluous extras.
You should receive a Moogle Flute at some point in the story, and whenever you use it, a little chime would play and you'd see the moogle come flying towards you and slide on the ground. You can dismiss it without giving him anything, and if you call him enough times, he gets angry. :O

how they solve it i think nobody really cares. The retainer idea people mentioned often and i think that would work pretty well and fit into the current system. But the devs answer dindt even make me lol anymore... rather cry...
This wasnt but a poor dev answer... it was... "facepalm" answer
In regards to the "off-line" thing. Sending items and/or messages to people who are not currently online is another big part of what a mail system should allow. It helps people on slightly different play schedules connect.
I just want to emphasize the message point. In-game mail should include messages too despite the possible RMT issue.
true. And the rmt issue... i never minded that. Its not hard to press the "delete" button on a rmt mail. And its also a way of tracking rmt easier (i think that at least). They game already implemented too many things to prevent rmt, which caused players to leave rather then rmt... i think they should stop the rmt thought rather and get the game in a good shape.
