This isn't Guild Wars, most mmo companies outside of ArenaNet know people like to feel more powerful as they get more gear. The whole game can't be based around looks when there isn't even a simple vanity system, you want the GW system then go play that, you want the vertical system then play any other mmo. You knew what you were getting into when you started with 14, they made it clear there would be vertical progression.

And in most rpgs the better the gear you get the more powerful you become, honestly haven't heard of an rpg outside of GW where there is not vertical progression as you progress throughout the game. Haven't even heard of an mmo other than GW or ff11(pre Abyssea, so like 4-5 years ago?) that didn't have a vertical progression either.
