You should be good. Are you using high bandwidth programs (such as 3D rendering or Premiere)? If not then an i7 chip is pretty moot as games don't use hyperthreading; you can do what i did: by a top line i5 chip and save approx 100 notes on your CPU price while getting the same performance.
