why? FFXI didnt magically have every map, it made you buy them or obtain them. That made the areas a lot more mysterious and interesting.

Instances are ok -sometimes- but the way this game implemented them fails. Again FFXI had it right

And floating birds are just stupid. For a bland realistic world they are like the one thing that doesn't fit. In ffxi they kinda flew around a bit more and made sounds and just seemed more fitting. but here they just kinda float, and are annoying.

A trollpost by gifthorse every day, wondering how in the world he seems so completely unable to move on from a game that he evidently doesn't like (and even more evidently he won't ever like, because the devs will never apply his outlandish views).

Well, I guess it's defined "obsession".

Map markers during quests and the leve screen after talking to a quest NPC.

Both of those make listening to NPCs completely pointless. Good plot isn't just good writing it's good writing implemented into the game not a book glued on top of it.

maps shouldn't be tedious to get more so if you love risk taking exploration but had an issue with directions.
Birds in this game are not real birds.... they are mobs we kill. of course they are not going to act like real birds. And they hover not float big difference.

nearly all of ffxi was considered instanced because everything was sectioned off in zones. And instance dungeons are one of few things I like because no sh1t for brains high level can come in and train kill all the mobs

not really.... even with pout those chance that ppl actually read npc dialog is slim.

What is so outlandish about deleting annoying mobs and trying to create an immersive (as opposed to jarringly fake and contrived) gameworld?

Unless by outlandish you mean awesome.

No, I mean outlandish, especially considering the fact that your idea of "awesome" is watching a character climbing a rope for one minute straight.

0 = Doesn't affect my immersion at all, 10 = Totally shatters my immersion.
    [*]Not being able to jump
    4

    [*]Being able to jump
-4. Negative because jumping would help immersion, not hurt it.

    [*]Floating birds
    2

[*]Throwing a magical hologram in the air at a sparkling crystal that spawns monsters (leves)
    0. I consider this a part of the game, much like the UI.

    [*]Uglifying spell effects
    3

[*]User Interface clogging up your screen (names, chat boxes, bars, etc)
    8. However, it should be said that I LIKE FFXIV's UI; it's very clean, and doesn't clutter my screen unlike other games that will remain nameless but insist on filling half my screen with UI elements.

    [*]Instances
    8. I hate instances universally.

[*]No collision detection (between players and mobs)
    6. I really hate that they removed the collision detection. There was zero need for it since you could still run through people. It just gave characters and enemies actual substance instead of everyone being a ghost.

    [*]No mob behaviour
    7. Stupid AI is annoying in many ways.

    [*]Magically having every map
    5. I love to explore. With the current maps, there's not much that's a mystery.

    [*]Voiceovers or lack thereof
    4. Important, but not gamebreaking by any stretch.

With this list, instances would win since I don't mind the UI in the game. And yes, I'm a RPer, so immersion is pretty important to me.

Immersion isn't based on how closely tied to reality the gameworld is. Immersion is a state of mind where you always want to keep going, no matter what. If you've ever played a game for hours on end because you kept telling yourself "Just one more level", or "After this next boss", or "Once I reach a save point", or anything to that effect, then you were immersed in that game. The presence or non-presence of a feature, or that birds float or hover rather than sitting and resting when they aren't moving, and other acceptable breaks from reality, is inconsequential to whether or not a game provides immersion for its audience.
