I really love how people try to 'debunk' something, make a fancy list, and then include that ARR 'stole' the idea of the FATE system... from Rift. FFS! no. no. no. (well, at least they didn't say GW2. hm)

FFIX - Active Time Event....
ATE
FFXIV - FATE iirc. Full Active Time Event
or some such silliness.

It's not called stealing when a game, or movie, or music album, uses designs that are critically acclaimed. There's no such thing as a copyright on game features —merely on the underlying proprietary code, as far as professional coders can avoid using comparable languages and algorithms.
Game design is a very iterative process, that's just the way it is. Here's a commentary on this notion by TotalBiscuit (from 0:38 to 3:48) that I found quite spot-on.
As far as 'public quests' are concerned, it was coined by Warhammer I think, and probably taken to the next level by Rift and GW2, before ARR—and in my humble opinion, ARR's take on it through the FATE system just isn't very good compared to what's been done in other games. Given the huge criticism made by players on FATE's, I think it would be smart for SE to redesign this feature in order to make it more engaging and less boring, bluntly put (see: backlash over the Lightning event for instance).

Note: I've completed my previous post (a projection of a typical ARR's expansion based on existing similarities with WoW's design), to make the list more comprehensive and hopefully free of judgemental takes.

“Focus on the journey, not the destination.
Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”
way to completely misunderstand the purpose of my post or the reason why I wrote 'stole' and not stole.....
edit: it's a personal annoyance of mine when people think the system stemmed from Rift (even worse when they think it came from GW2 :P), that's all. it also usually happens in topics that are about how this and that is supposedly 'stolen' (again that word. heh) from some other game when people try to make sure everyone knows they've been around in the MMO-world.
I obviously don't think anything is stolen. there's hardly a patent on live events. (and if anything, it would be WAR to own that one, unless there's been - probably pretty unknown - MMOs before that one that used the system)
a) it absolutely does when the point of it being mentioned was 'hey look I know stuff is from other games'
b) I find the rifts to be just as annoying as fates.
*shrug*
edit: of course I don't miiind Fates, when they are an alternative means to do stuff in game. more options = better.
I do mind though that people claim that I don't level fast enough because I don't do them.... /yawn

How so? I apologise if I misunderstood your post. Please elaborate, it was rather vague.
About the quotation marks: not everyone understands these subtleties, I just wanted to state things a bit more clearly. That wasn't necessarily to antagonise you specifically (though I did quote you and that ambiguity is on me, apologies for that).
Edit: oh I see we agree then.![]()

I understand this sentiment. Although people don't tell me to do FATEs, but I know they are probably thinking ( Man this guy is playing the game wrong lol). Anyways, after 2.1 it won't even matter as Dungeons will be near or on par with FATEs. So all this won't even matter ( except the fact that we are still leveling fast at that point). Once the Level cap gets raised I feel it won't be so easy (as some people call it) now.
That's what I remember too, FFXI came to America with Rise of Zilart with 4-6 more Jobs attached to it. ( I came at CoP and there was I think 12-14 Jobs at that point).

It really doesn't matter who did it first. Rift's got open world dynamic content down to a friggin' art.
I can agree with ya there. Fate grinding is the last thing I wanna do. >_< Zergy crowds doing the same couple fates over and over again. No thanks!
