Whatever they do they need to stick to their quarterly major update schedule with an expansion at 3.0, 4.0 etc, content at the moment is very thin.

Since no one has gotten it exactly right...
Vanilla FFXI had 12 jobs
Summoner launched 1 or 2 patches before Zilart release with just Carbuncle.
Zilart brought SAM NIN DRG
CoP Nada
ToAU BLU COR PUP
Wings SCH DNC
SoA RUN GEO
Zilart had Samurai, Dragoon and Ninja, right. Summoner was released with Zilart but technically wasn't part of it; you could unlock Summoner without having Zilart. However, you had to have Zilart to unlock any of Summoner's avatars beyond Carbuncle, so your Summoner was gimped if you didn't have Zilart. I always regarded Summoner's release in the vanilla FFXI as sort of a Zilart "free sample" to encourage people to get Zilart.I think zilart came with samurai, dragoon, ninja? Can't remember what cop introduced, jobs wise (summoner?) but I know for sure toau introduced blue mage, corsair, puppet master. Then wotg introduced scholar and dancer, while adoulin introduced geomancer and rune knights.
So that's 3, 1 (unsure), 3, 2, 2? Hopefully ARR expansion starts with introducing 3 new jobs, or a major update introducing 1 job and then 2 jobs at expansion.
Now that I think about it, that's quite a few jobs pre zilart (6 basic, 5 unlocks). Maybe some of them were from updates.
Promathia introduced no new classes whatsoever.
As a small addition, Crystalline Prophecy/Moogle Kupo d'Etat/Shantotto Ascension were classified as "Add-on scenarios" and Abbysea as "Add-on battlefields", so it might be unfair to call them "expansions" that didn't add any classes, as SE never called them "expansions".
That's 23 jobs, last i checked FFXI still has 22.
I seem to remember reading in Elmer the Pointy's history that Summoner was a pre-Zilart release and I'm pretty sure Zilart was Samurai/Ninja/Dragoon. My guess is it was 11 at release with Summoner the 12th just before Zilart. Which would mean up until Zilart Summoner only had its nuclear squirrel (all the avatar battles - i think, it's been a while - take place in Zilart areas except Diablos (CoP) and Alexander/Odin (ToAU)).
From the wiki
Using NA release dates for simplicity
Prior to the Zilart expansion, the standard jobs were Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief. extra jobs were Dark Knight, Paladin, Ranger, Bard, Summoner and Beastmaster. (FWIW I don't recall Beastmasters being in game during the Zilart expansions which is when I played, but I also am shaky on what I had for breakfast yesterday)
Zilart - 2003
Samurai, Ninja, Dragoon
CoP - 2004
None
ToAU - 2006
Blue Mage, Corsair, Puppetmaster
WotG - 2007
Dancer, Scholar
SoA - 2013
Geomancer, Rune Fencer
ITT, OP provides yet another example of why being a FFXI player carries stigma in this community (as well as others)
Free advice: you're making XI and its fanbase look bad. Stop.
It's worth noting that TBC was an expansion, and took over 2 years to release. Considering ARR is a launch title in its third month of life, you're comparing two things which aren't remotely equivalent.

They should change nothing about FFXIV EVER!! It is 100% perfect as it is. If they added anything to the game it would just soooo ruin it.
Especially if they added anything from FFXI... i mean, what kind of loser company even made that game?
There is nothing at all redeemable about FFXI and nothing from that game should be carried over. I mean, 11 and 14 arent even the same number.
Plus look at all the stupid races they had in FFXI, humans? Really? Midgets? Musclebound big people? Cat people? Elves? Come on, this is 2013!
And all those stupid classes they had, like Paladin, Warrior, Bard, Black Mage, White Mage, Monk, Summoner... Those have nothing to to with FFXIV, at all, ever.

I've posted this many, many times...here is the FFXI update history..from the very start:

Anyway, I hope this game doesn't follow anything more from WOW...if I wanted to play it I'd go play it. I hope the devs start to be at least a little more innovative.
