No, FFXI had 11 jobs at JP release that were all fully different classes (Warrior, Monk, Thief, White Mage, Red Mage, Black Mage, Paladin, Bard, Darknight, Ranger, Beastmaster)
FFXIV has 9 jobs that are fully different classes (not so much for Summoner and Scholar but ok).
The other “classes” are not played post level 40 by 95% of the player base, so I do not see why we should count them.

May we add that this is a re-release and not a fully new game? I think expecting a bit more than what we got was not foolish.

If you go that way, i will say this, FFXIV have more, 8 Classes & 9 Jobs.

Decade old game, we expect better quality from games in over a decade. Should I have expected Pokemon X/Y to be nearly identical to Pokemon Red/Blue in every way, only 150 pokemon, no abilities, no held items, no new end game? No, because it's a game from almost 20 years ago.

What the game is missing is just the uniqueness of your character. Right now everyone running around looking the same with same gear and same looks and same colors. Also they been lacking on reasons for people to go back and to do old dungeons and old stuff since it all worthless in a week if you fate party to lv50. They really need have some randomness in the game, but not from a drop from the same mobs. The casino effect type randomness were you can if you played for long enough there is a chance to get items or gear that only 5 them may drop per week on your server from anywhere would be a example. It would be nice if the gear had also like borderlands like random stats for the same items level also. So with enough work or luck you can have item level 55 gear just as good as item lv70 type gears. I understand the melds kind of work that way, but that systems is on rails also.

If I go which way? The way of the facts?
As I wrote, the 11 jobs of FFXI had different gameplays, there were true distinct classes.
The difference between jobs and classes in FFXIV is slim, to say the least, and do not offer a different gameplay.
More than that, the game is not designed so you use either your job or class. As I said above, about 95% plays only their job,
so the 8 classes cannot be compared to a FFXI job.
I wish the game was designed so you had more differences between your class and your job.

If FFXIV was meant to be a direct sequel/upgrade of FFXI then you could expect it to have everything FFXI has and then some. That is not what FFXIV is though, it is an entirely new and different game with similar themes. If they released a new Pokemon game set in a completely different world with no Pokemon directly taken from the previous games the first one in that series wouldn't have 6 regions and 700+ pokemon.

I expect new MMOs to be a competitor to current ones. Should we have to wait years for FFXIV be comparable to current MMOs? I feel like all new MMOs should take all amenities from current MMOs before being released. Don't you agree?

No, because they're different games. I wouldn't expect any MMO to launch with 4+ full story campaigns, dozens of raids/dungeons and 20+ classes because that's an unreasonable expectation. If a game is a direct sequel then maybe I could see having that kind of expectation but that's rarely ever the case, especially with MMOs. Content takes time to create and this game is not building directly on top of another. It is its own new game with its own classes, world and content separate from all other games.

I wouldn't either but even F2P games have more compelling end game on release.
