Would this really slow down the client that much?
Due to the fact that we have a maximum of 512 members for a free company and 1024 people when you have all eight linkshells maxed out (128 people per linkshell), which totals 1536 people that the program would have to process on top of the max character display process (30 characters for PS3), it would by no means be light compared to other UI processes.
*With 30 characters displayed on the screen, the comparison process would occur 46080 times. As FFXIV is an MMO, there is a possibility that the targets for comparison change for every screen that is drawn, so we wouldn’t be able to decrease the frequency of the process and reduce stress. In regards to the number of times the process occurs, it would be possible to reduce it somewhat by constricting what is processed such as FC members only or FC members and your current LS members.
The implementation of this type of feature wouldn’t likely be cause for a noticeable reduction in game speed.
However, UI features are like dust in the sense that even though they start small when they pile up they become a mountain, and if we don’t leave a good margin for the additional features we need to add in the future, there is the danger that we won’t have the capacity needed when adding new content.
Addressing this kind of display is by no means impossible from a technological standpoint; however, we’ve decided that it’s not something that is high enough priority to implement immediately ahead of other features.
