    That bird can be a great help in fighting, I'm currently lv 50, so I don't need exp - so I don't worry how much exp my chocobo takes from me.
    It will take time to make a strong healer/warrior/etc chocobo - but it will be a great helping hand in fates, too bad we can not take them to dungeon

    Chocobos don't take any exp from you, regardless of level. They get their own exp separately.

    Edit: I was wrong. It apparently takes 25% exp.

    Kill a mob solo, then kill one with chocobo out. It takes a percentage of your exp for itself so it can level up.
