    Dark Ixion was my favorite part of FFXI - just wish the windows had been smaller.

    FFXIV will grow and get big boy MMO pants eventually - I mean I hope it does. Crystal Tower and BCB with multiple branches would be great - but there should be some open world content.

    Parity was pretty present in FFXI content up until ToAU (ToAU had tons of Instanced content).
    You had BCNM/Dynamis (Instanced) with (Open) HNM/Kings/NM/Sky (RoZ),
    then expanded with more HNM+/NM+/Sea(Open) with Limbus/BCNM+/Dynamis+(Instanced) (CoP),
    then HNM+/NM+/Besieged/ZNM/ISNM(Open) and Nyzul/Assualt/Einherjar/Salvage(Instanced) (ToAU),
    then Campaign/NM+/VWNM(Open) with MMM/CampaignOps/WoE(Instanced) (WoTG),
    and then Abyssea AbyNM/AbyHNM/Bastion/Legion(Time-Limit/Open),
    and Reive/Skirmish/MB/NM+ (SoA)

    Basically - FFXIV has no balance between Open and Instanced as far as endgame content goes.

    Instances in are a one way trip - like you're being squeezed through the various colons of A Realm Reborn; only to be deposited in Revenant's Toll - a sphincter of endgame where you sit wearing your glorious new gear waiting around - with nothing more to do but to go make your way through the next linear dungeon, to get the next set of gear to wait around in.

    No rinsing, just repeat until the smell and the taste gets to you. No exploration and nothing dynamic - the greater non-instanced world is just big a waiting room with things to fritter away time on between dungeon colonoscopies.
