Jobs have very iconic appearances, and it just makes sense to me that SE wants to preserve those very iconic appearances in the armor they create specifically for those jobs. You can most definitely place the Maelstrom emblem on your gear, but I wouldn't expect Square to allow much more than that.

As for the other sets of gear... Yeah, I guess I could agree that it would be nice to dye the other dungeon sets, even if I think their appearance is perfectly fine as is. In a way, I suppose it could be kinda like the "artifact" gear for the crafting and gathering classes: looks great without dyeing, but looks okay if you dye it anyway.

Really wish more games would get on the charter customization kick instead of having everyone look like clones. The freaking forced cowls and full plate armor even takes away the one thing that does make characters somewhat unique from one another.

This. In general there's little variety with armor designs throughout your leveling experience but at least you can dye those, the endgame armor being mostly undyeable unless you spend a good amount of gil and those are only ilvl 70 gear is really awful. I understand the thing with hero's armor being iconic and stuff but everyone will mostly look the same at some point, many are already due to those horrendous darklight pieces. :c

Gear that can't be dyed wasn't designed with dyeing in mind, either purposely or as an oversight.

I think it was a design decision to make only crafted (craftable) items customizable, because crafting itself is meant to provide customization.
Perhaps I'm simply being cynical here, but I can't help but think that it's not a coincidence that most of the best and best looking armors in the game are undyable. By having players gravitate towards these, it allows them reduce the memory overhead used storing more armor model variation that you would otherwise see.

Yeah I'm dreading getting my Darklight set. But it's part of the progression :/ At least the higher level crafting outfits look cool enough to be seen in.

Same, my GF is a huge fan of Black Mages. However, she keeps the set from stone vigil since her AR gear is black. While she rather dons the Blue robe and Yellow pointy hat. The designs are awesome, they surely are. But why I cannot dye it is a mysterie to me.

Despite the almost daily maintenance periods for this game, I don't foresee them changing this for months either. Even if they planned on doing it, so this is just super depressing to me. It makes me not want to hit endgame honestly. I'm supposed to be excited to get gear, but I'm honestly dreading it. As a red loving Paladin, Artifact 2 is just icky. The only set I can even think of enjoying is Allagan, but heaven knows if I'll ever see that. ~//~

Here's hoping vanity slots can ease the pain.

Thay have explained this several times. AF's will never be dyed because the design is connected to the job lore and feel. A White mage AF can't be black and purple.

Dungeon drops like the battlemage tunic are suposed to be unique items so the color and designs are fixed, crafted items on the other hand are created by people all over Eorzea in mass so those can be dyed or bought of any colour.

Bascially, it's a lore thing. Some may like it, some may not but that's how it is and don't expect it to change.

Good to now, but I think I'll keep pressing the issue anyways. Enough pressure from the fanbase and they might at least lift the restrictions on the dungeon gear. There's heavy division on the AF gear, but only a tiny minority seem to favor locking out the rest of the gear. Maybe Square should stop being stubborn and listen.

Petition to lift the silly dye restrictions:

Just say NO to vanity slot restrictions:
