Man, the first time I entered Coerthas I instantly loved the music. ....and then I fought something, and my mind was blown by the change in combat music. It was awesome.
I recently got to revisit the area while leveling up my second job, and remembered why I enjoyed it so much the first time. Definitely one of my favorite zones in the game.
I'm actually sad that Dragonhead is not the end game zone to hang out. Instead we get the stupid Ravenant's toll with that repetitive theme song from North Thanalan.
Coerthas theme is the best IMO, and it's actually awesome you hear the organ theme in the battle system.
I agree with this sentiment.
The region has just been devastated by an occurrence so horrific, it was deemed worthy of marking the initiation of an Umbral Era. This is roughly equivalent to an Earth-wide global depression or a post World-War recovery period. That's very true and I know that the music is related to what happened to this area and that it makes sense. I still do not like it tho but different strokes for different folks I guess and like I said, it is nothing that needs to be changed.
I adjust my speakers accordingly and everything is fine. From the first responses, it seems that the majority of you like it and I get where you are coming from. FF14ARR is the first FF-Game where I do not get warm with the Story because it's most of the time plain texts which are not dragging me into the World and Story and maybe that's why the Music doesn't connect me with the Story of that zone.
Thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands, perished in battle or in the flame of the Calamity. Many more likely were pushed out from their home, saw their loved ones die, grieved for the loss of their land, or physically suffered as a refugee and the lack of basic necessities that come with that. Cultures and livelihoods were shattered.
And this is in the three nations, which were not ground zero of the Calamity.
If anything, the Coerthas theme music, and the environment, are not nearly as dark and dreadful as they should be. Here are just a few reasons why.
1. In Coerthas, where the people are already weary and nearly completely exhausted from the perpetual strife against dragons, now had to deal with the incursion of the ruthless Imperials, who cause mischief and mayhem wherever they go.
2. Ixali from the nearby stronghold of Natalan have summoned Garuda, who saps away aetherial energy from the land, rending untold damage to the environment and whipping the Ixali into a religious zeal that spurs them to encroach on the Coerthan keeps and its people.
3. Voidsent and other terrible beings emerged from dungeons in their area (Dzemael Darkhold, Aurum Vale) and threaten to spill out from their lairs.
4. The dragon Svara repeatedly battles with the knights of Dragonhead, killing dozens of them every week, only to return in full strength again and again, mocking them from the once-glorious Steel Vigil.
5. The Stone Vigil, likewise, has been lost and the knights of Whitebrim Front are utterly broken by the pointless loss of life in the process, and the improbability of retaking it.
6. Gigas, who were once relegated to the high mountains, are now free to descend with the snow and fight with the Coerthans. Even their hero, Steropes, returns regularly with his entourage to slay any who dare to travel with supplies from Whitebrim Front to Dragonhead.
7. In addition, Roc and evil Ice spirits block the same passage.
8. Behemoth wanders freely in the now ice-covered desert, terrorizing the knights with his booming howl.
9. A giant crater at Boulder Downs attracts all manners of beasts. Did I mention it's a giant crater where there was once usable forest?
10. Morale is incredibly low, as one can understand. Sidequests we engage in ask us to bring fur, food, and firewood to the knights. How bad can things truly be, if the once-proud Coerthans stoop so low as to ask foreigners for their aid? They are a notoriously aloof people; their situation must be truly dire to let adventurers act freely. Even the supremely snobby knights at the Gates of Judgment tolerate your presence and ask for aid.
11. Other sidequests ask you to lend help to a struggling Observatorium. An infirmary in dire straits. A prison filled with heretics. Supply and scouting teams lost or dead in cold ice. An inexplicable and dangerous crystal formation. A who-done-it murder mystery. Ogres and crocodiles that harass the people.
- - <<Spoilers>> ...... To top it all off, people are being carried off in droves and executed by the magistrate from the Holy See for heresy. These people, who have committed themselves permanently to their crusade against dragons and their worshippers, think that they have been completely infiltrated. Neighbors, friends, and family alike are tried and executed for a fight in which you've lived your whole life. Who can you trust? Where is it safe from heretics? Are we really safe?

The only music that annoys me is Dragonhead camp you go in and it's BLAAARING ONE NOOOOOTE.

Yeah, but the war got worst for Ishgard since the calamity, because the Dravonians used the chance to conquer one of the fortress. There were dragons everywhere in terms of story/lore in 1.0 as well (we obviously didn't get to experience it all yet for a very obvious reason) and we still had this music:

So yeah, they kind of always been up the creek without a paddle since the inception of XIV.
For people who are interested, this was Coerthas in 1.0: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h18KVbpcRMI

It's prob my favorite background music in the game. I wish it wasn't buggy and played more often.
My favorite parts of the Coerthas music is the young male vocal and the piano solo
