Been playing MMOs since Pre-WoW era. "Toon" Still amuses me.

It's a term that has been synonymous with character since the early days of RPG's that people seem to get their panties in a bunch over for the past 10 years or so on video game forums.

No, no it hasn't been. It first started popping up in the Diablo1 to EQ1 era, then became stupidly common with WoW.

The same people who use the word toon tend to be the same people who refer to Archers/Bards as Hunters. In either case, yes, I find it annoying.
