So in other words SE puts crappy servers for the market wards and doesnt care about fixing them because if they crash it's no big deal.
SE needs to employ better servers and better network coders so they can actually start to implement P2P-quality mechanics.
No, in other words the main game doesn't crash even if the wards do.
Don't put in words that aren't there just to bash the company :/
Peach Parfait/Khulan Angura on Gilgamesh
So you're saying they can easily sacrifice the wards crashing due to crappy servers while preserving the main game which has slightly less crappy servers.
Just bring in better servers for the main game and then BRING IT TO THE STREETS.
The wards aren't crashing due to crappy servers, the wards are crashing because of the extreme amount of overhead involved in trying to perform the simple task of trading items.
A "server" as you know it in MMO terms is actually a collection of several different machines, each tasked to handle a certain part of the game. I'm not 100% familiar with how SE operates, but you have a machine that hosts the Gridania/Black Shroud area, one for Limsa Lominsa/La Noscea, etc. A while ago there was a patch aimed at relieving lag by adding more machines per zone, and it caused some ruckus because transitioning between one machine and the other was not very smooth.
And then there's a machine that hosts the market wards. Because of the extreme amount of overhead involved in performing the simple task of trading items, these servers are constantly going down or being unresponsive. The servers handling the transactions between players is not a challenge in any sense, but what takes up a lot of processing power and storage is having to store texture details, graphic details, and other information for ALL of the retainers and players, and then they have to process this information and pass all of it to your computer so that your client can recreate the zones. All of this in addition to providing transaction services. I don't know if they only have a single server handling the market wards per game world, but it's pretty obvious that they're under a lot of strain even with the small amount of people that are playing.
For every other MMO, the auction house server only does the transactions, which is why they're so stable.
