I have no concrete proof that SE chops up the music but if you watch all the interviews with Nobuo Uematsu you would know the pride he takes in his music scores. Then look at all his work with the FF XIV songs in Distant Worlds, and i come to the conclusion that SE either chopped the music or put heavy restrictions on Uematsu when developing the songs for the game.

But I feel you on your dislike for the electric guitar tracks. They're not as annoying to me as the instrumentation of the XI battle tracks, but as a whole they're pretty bad.

What they SHOULD do, is get Masashi Hamauzu to do the battle tracks, as obviously he is feeling it when it comes to grandiose battle themes. Check out Blinded By Light, the XIII battle theme.

Rate up if you're feeling THAT!
This version of this song is very well done. I concur.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but that's not the version that's in XIII itself.

Hurray for one redeemable thing to come out of FF13.
(Not going to start a debate on this particular opinion, pls).

He can easily decide to re-arrange his pieces for orchestra for projects like Distant Worlds. They have to be simple and forever-looping to be put into a video game as background music, or else the piece would end, maybe restart, and it would sound awkward for a second (this does happen in some games). He creates looped pieces on the computer for the games he's worked on, then he creates a new score for orchestra arrangements, with new varieties and such.

In short, both the music you hear in all of the games as well as the epic orchestral arrangements you hear on Distant Worlds are music straight out of Uematsu's brain. It's not difficult for a composer to take something and re-arrange it, granted he has the prior experience.

I do agree that some of the tracks in XIV have that old school Nobuo FF feel to them but at the same time I think they lack the creativity of his past work that really makes it stand out. Not only that, but again, the soundtrack doesn't really suit the game. I do appreciate you for not flaming me though. It's just like, my opinion, man.
Yeah, dood, this is one of my favorite FF battle tracks of all times.

But that's because it's such a throw back to the NES / SNES days (as much of IX was meant to be). I mean this song (and several other IX songs) remind you what it's like to be playing a Final Fantasy game 1-6 anyway. They need to do another IX style game where they reuse and revamp old ideas.

I like VII but I feel like it killed the series. I could pretty much live without VIII, X, XII, XIII.

XI & XIV are kind of their own branch off which have their ups and downs in my opinion of the "whole series" as it were.

It's odd to me, though, that you don't like "Man with a Machine Gun" or "Battle with Seymour." One of the most redeeming things about VIII in particular was its OST.

Let me erase the preconceived notion that Uematsu develops the game tracks before the orchestral, because it varies.

I understand that a games track needs to loop but that does not account for how piss poor of quality the renditions for the games were.

He was watching power rangers 2 years ago. Not surprising.

I agree, the music in XI was much better. But I do like Coerthas I just wish the song was a bit longer and not so repetitive :T and the Mor dhona music is interesting.

Man with a Machine Gun and Balamb Garden are two tracks from the FF8 soundtrack I REALLY like, just wasn't too impressed by the entire thing. Battle With Seymour is good but the standard battle/boss themes in FF10 are awful.
